Grimsby reverse turns record against Schofield
By Nathan Jackson September 22 2007
Lincoln's defeat to Grimsby Town means that John Schofield has now lost more games than he's won in charge of the Imps. The Mariners hadn't won a League game at Sincil Bank since the 1957/8 season. Justin Whittle gave Grimsby the lead before City equalised out of nowhere. Grimsby were then given a quite controversial penalty at the beginning of the second half, Ciarton Toner slotting it home.

The opening was quiet and it wasn't until just after the 10 minute mark that either side created a chance. That came as a result of a Jamie Forrester cross. A Grimsby defender tried to clear it and end up kicking it against his other leg and it went just over the bar. Rather unsurprisingly Frecklington's corner was crap and went straight at the first defence.

Nat Brown was lucky to stay on the pitch minutes later as he up-ended Tom Newey as the former Orient man was bursting into the area. Brown should have seen red as he was the last man but was surprisingly only given a yellow card. Grimsby wasted the resultant free kick by hitting it straight at Dodds.

Grimsby won a corner midway through the half and it was taken by Toner. He sent the ball over everyone and just as City failed to clear the ball, the ball was floated back into the box and Justin Whittle sent in a little chip that went past Marriott, who made virtually not effort to get to the ball might I add, and it was 1-0 to Grimsby. It was the first League goal Grimsby had scored at City in 19 seasons.

It was all Grimsby now and htey came close to scoring a second but Nat Brown yet again appeared to foul an attacker. From the free kick the Mariners won another corner. Nick Fenton headed it goalwards and only a Louis Dodds header meant that it remained only 1-0.

Then out of the blue and much against the run of play, City scored. Good work from Torpey saw him produce a through-ball for Forrester and the striker scored his first open goal in the League since scoring against Mansfield last season.

Nat Brown headed a corner wide a few minutes or two later but that was the final chance of the first half and City went off to a chorus of boos, despite having equalised a few minutes later.

The first note-worthy incident of the second half saw N'Guessan head wide in front of an open goal. From this the Mariners took the ball down the other end of the pitch and Rankin ran through several defenders. He then ran into Adie Moses and did his best impression of an Arsenal player as he dived theatrically, the referee was fooled and the Mariners had a penalty. Toner converted the spot kick.

City almost equalised immediately as a Louis Dodds sent a volley goalwards, it appeared to enter the net from certain angles, but ending up going wide of the target. Beevers cleared another chance down the other end from Peter Till.

City made a double substitution as Amoo and Stallard came on for Croft and Torpey, Croft getting a good reception from the Grimsby fans. Played stopped briefly as two Grimsby player's headbutted each other. One of them, Hunt, had to be substituted and was replaced by Jamie Clarke.

Barnes then produced a brilliant save to prevent Stallard scoring from Amoo's cross. Forrester then missed an absolute sitter, blasting over from a yard out fo an open goal. Till wasted a similar chance for Grimsby.

City's lack of luck was on show in the 77th minute when Hoof Brown headed in a cross, only to have it ruled out for apparantly pushing by the defender.....shock. Frecklgtino went off for Ollie Ryan.

A double save from Jones and Boshell by Marriott kept the score at 2-1. Added on time was all Grimsby's, missing several chances to extend their lead before they should have had a penalty when Hoof blatently fouled Jones. It wasn't given despite that it was a more obvious penalty than the one that was given.

City failed to create a chance in time added on and suffered their 6th defeat in 8 league and cup games this season.
