Over the last 3 or so months I've been struggling to put into words how disappointed I am that we threw away promotion. In the previous 4 years we had sort of flirted with the outskirts of automatic promotion, however last season it was in our hands and we still managed to screw it up.
We WERE (no debate about it) the best footballing side in League 2 last season. Whenever we played it on the floor last season we destroyed our opponents. It says it all that we took 11 points out of a possible 18 against the 3 sides that did go back up automatically, the highest amount for any side that didn't go up last season.
Now, the one thing I've liked over the summer is that we've gotten rid of two players who were causing us to go backwards. As much as I respect Paul Morgan and will never forget his contribution in general since he joined in 2001, he got a bit crap defensively in the final few months of the season and seemed to have lost all confidence he had before.
But the biggest transfer of our summer was getting rid of that waster known as Jeff Hughes. We will now finally start playing someone in the left midfield position that will actually put some effort in for an occasion other than when the Sky cameras aren't about.
As for our squad we have started putting together a side that should finally gain promotion. The squad as it stands is the best it's been since 2002. There isn't a particularly weak area of our squad and we have an exciting bunch of youngsters at City that could be around for years to come and be the backbone of the success of the club in the future.
Many youngsters at this club are set for big things with Phil Watt expected to make his full league debut for the club on Saturday. He has looked very accomplished during the pre-season and has only been second to Dany N'Guessan in terms of getting plaudits in recent weeks.
The only real concern at Sincil Bank is the distinct lack of back up in one or two positions, but hopefully we will sort that out in the coming weeks. Everyone has also criticised the age of most of the incoming players, citing their age of over 30 as to a reason for our potential lack of success, an argument nullified by the fact a LOT of the players in the 75/76 record breaking season were over 30.
It is vital to maintain a good run all throughout the season and I am confident we can finally achieve promotion, finishing in 2nd place.
