You can't look anywhere regarding League Two predictions without the so called "experts", who I suspect have never watched a League Two game, predict Peterborough United to finish top of the table due to Darragh McAnthony's wealth. It's a case of deja vu for most long-term 4th tier fans after Hull were constantly predicted to be Champions and then fail miserably until succeeding at the 4th attempt.
Last season Peterborough started well but as soon as McAnthony came in you knew Keith wouldn't last there much longer, despite going on a run of 10 wins in 14 games. It was only because of a bad run at Christmas that Keith lost his job and then Barry Fry's catchphrase turned into "We hired Darren (Ferguson) because he didn't mention his dad once during his interview". The son of Sir Alex then continued Peterborough's miserable run to 10 defeats in 12 games, and yet everyone in Peterborough was still trying to convince you that this guy was the right choice.
Although form did slightly improve after that losing run, they were still getting extremely poor results against the whipping boys of the division. They lost to Bristol Rovers, who were lower midtable at the time, Macclesfield Town, Accrington Stanley, as well as only getting draws against Torquay, Chester and Boston......and you're trying to convince me that Darren Ferguson is the man to take you up.
Peterborough did have a fairly decent squad last season but have barely added to it. They've brought in money-grabbing Dean Keates and Chris Westwood, a pair who proved how loyal they are when they left Walsall to rejoin the division they had just been promoted from for slightly more money. They've also brought in 2 players who've never played a Football League game in their life.
So, let me get this straight, a side that everyone raved about was struggling to get results against teams struggling against relegation, and just because you add two mercenaries and two rookies they become title contenders??? I don't think so somehow.
Don't get me wrong, they do have a talented squad but Darren Ferguson is not as good of a manager as everyone seems to think he is. Sons very rarely have the same success as managers as their fathers do, just look at the Clough's for a great example of that. Infact Ferguson the younger's record as a manager so far stands at 18 games, 7 wins 5 draws and 6 defeats.....doesn't sound like the record of a manager who will supposedly guarantee promotion during the coming season.
I think Darren Ferguson will be saved his job simply because some of the players he has in his squad, but to think of them as title contenders based on the run that the majority of that team had last season, lack of loyal and experienced incoming players and a manager who's record is very average, is pushing the term of "Title Favourites" very far.
For this reason I am predicting them to finish in 6th place, but they are a long way off being seriously considered for the title.
