Bland Chester set for annual relegation battle
By Nathan Jackson
July 20 2007
Chester are often refered to in this division as the blandest in the Football League, and will hope it's not 4th time unlucky after 3 successful fights against relegation. A below-average squad, small and quiet crowds and a manager who has lost more games than he's won doesn't exactly make the future look bright for Chester, with only the re-signing of Ellison proving inspirational.
chesterprediction

Chester City are one of the those sides that don’t often trouble the top half of the table, and are often found looking over their shoulders at relegation. In 2004/5 they spent the entire season fighting the drop straight back to the Conference after winning the title a year before hand, only a good run in the early-middle part of the season saved them from relegation. They would have gone down in 2005/6 had it not been for Derek Asamoah going on his first (and to date only) goal spree and last season they were never really in danger of relegation, but spent most of the season down in that region.

Last season’s game between Lincoln and Chester at the Saunders Honda Ground was a very odd affair indeed. Lincoln dominated the game but somehow managed to come out of Chester with a 4-1 defeat behind them. The first goal that day was a near replica of Chester’s first goal the season before, in other words there was a blatant foul on Marriott that went unpunished an the Chester player hit it into the net. Luck and the defence certainly deserted the Imps that day as Chester scored with their only four decent chances on goal.

The game at Sincil Bank was very similar in terms of Lincoln’s domination, and Chester then almost scored with their first chance when they won a penalty. Thankfully it was a rubbish penalty and City went on to get the result that secured the Imps another shot at the Playoffs. If City had lost that match then the way the other results went meant that the Imps would have finished 8th.

Looking at the squad of Chester you would be forgiven for thinking that there weren’t many players capable of changing a match, with their best player being Kevin Ellison, who rejected City after a successful loan spell, citing the reason that he didn’t want to move away from his home in the North West, within a year he had joined Hull, that’s just how loyal Ellison is to his own words. Other ex-Imps in Chester’s squad are Simon Yeo and Kevin Sandwith, both involved in Playoff Failures for the Imps.

Other than that the Chester side is extremely average at best and there’s only one of their players that I would like to see playing in a Lincoln shirt in the future and that is Dean Bennett.

They are currently rejecting offers for Simon Yeo from Bury, if he goes then there goes about 10 goals a season for Chester and you get a feeling that will cost them anything higher than 20th place. Not only this but their manager, Bobby Williamson, doesn’t exactly have the best record in management and has lost more games than he’s won during his career and any manager with that sort of record isn’t one that I would put in charge of my side if you intended not to fight against relegation.

Overall, I predict a 20th placed finish for Chester, but had it not been for the signing of Ellison then I would have predicted them to finish rock bottom.

Do you agree with this prediction or do you think it's Chester's turn to finally go down?

I think it proves the blandness that when I predicted Shrewsbury for relegation they invaded this board and gave me months worth of abuse. I predict Chester will finish 20th and they barely react.

Apparantly I'm a musican by trade now according to a Shrewsbury fan. Then again, he seems to think that Shrewsbury fans coming on here 2 years ago and verbally abusing me in particular, as well other members of the board who stuck up for me, is them just correcting a few points about my report.

I agree with Nathan that CCFC will be down the bottom end of the table. However I agree with their fans that to say we dominated the game at theirs is stretching the truth somewhat, the 'foul' for the 1st goal was alos committed by Eaden!

Yeo bagged hattrick in friendly yesterday so I hear and Chester have announced they want to keep him

Also they have signed Lowndes and Partridge as well as Ellison, all 3 have the ability to do well at this level, for the first 2 in particular I thinks it a case of if they can forfill there ability they will do well

Chester are definately one of the most bland teams in the division. How are their fans suprised that you've predicted 20th? I'd say anywhere below 15th.

S'pose I should stick up for my adopted home, but Stephen Vaughan has gone quiet for the moment and that removes any entertainment value associated with the football club.

Biggest shock is that Yeo doesn't seem to be going to old mucker Keef after all.

Lower table mediocrity once again, but no one here over here will notice anyway unless thay actually get relegated.

The women aren't too bad over here, just have to avoid the Sat night/race day @#$%&.

went to chester some ten years or so ago on the eagle bus with brammer. what a lovely town centre, and what a lovely trip, topped off by a stop in worksop on the way home. granted the grounds a bit ropey. but a lovely town.

Apparantly I now talk@#$%&for the saying the following.

"with their best player being Kevin Ellison, who rejected City after a successful loan spell, citing the reason that he didn’t want to move away from his home in the North West, within a year he had joined Hull, that’s just how loyal Ellison is to his own words."

Not one single part of that is false. He rejected us in the summer of 2004 after the loan spell during the previous season, saying in the Echo and on the radio that he didn't want to leave the north west, signed for Chester and left them for Hull, proving that he talked a load of bullshit when he said he wouldn't move from the North East.
