Imps lose 3-0 at Retford
By Nathan Jackson
July 18 2007
A very young Imps side lost 3-0 at Retford Town despite controlling the majority of the game. An early penalty, a deflected shot and a goal with only seven Imps on the pitch decided the game. The youth team, with only 1 first team appearance between them certainly weren't as bad as the scoreline would make you believe, with a 3-0 result flattering the hosts.
City’s first friendly ended with the youthful Imps side losing 3-0 at Retford United. The game started with City having a few decent chances but it was the hosts that got the game’s first goal, converting a penalty after the goalkeeper brought down the attacker in the area.

City had several good chances to get back into the game, the best chance falling to Gary King who had his header brilliantly saved by the Retford keeper, John-Lewis then blasted the rebound against the post and out for a goalkick.

In a half controlled by City they couldn’t find an equaliser and then Retford scored from their second attack when a shot just before half time deflected heavily off of a defender and looped over the Imps goalkeeper and into the net to give Retford a rather undeserved 2-0 lead.

The second half was a very tame affair with the referee refusing to allow City to replace three injured players and the Imps conceded a third late on in the game, Retford eventually winning 3-0 to give the Imps a losing start to the pre-season.
