Where Do You Think You're Going? Barnet
By Nathan Jackson May 26 2007
Lincoln City will travel to Barnet hoping to avoid a repeat of the 5-2 defeat there during the 2007/8 season and to record a third win in four at Underhill after having never previously won there before 2006. Despite being close to London, trains from Lincoln to Barnet are surprisingly sparse, although you do get to get past a brand spanking new stadium on the way.

City have only ever won at Barnet’s Underhill twice and both of those were in two of our three visits since they re-entered the league. It’s a ground that often sees quite a lot of goals scored, with 24 goals being scored between the two sides in the last 4 games. The 2000/1 season saw City take an early 3-0 lead and still lose, whereas in the 2005/6 season Barnet took a 2-0 lead with an hour goal and City took maximum points, it’s far from predictable at Underhill. The previous 2 trips there have seen one of the teams score 5 goals.

Underhill is a bit of a shithole to be honest. Even the addition of a new seated stand behind one of the goals fails to improve the look of the ground. City fans are expected to be in the terraced section of the ground again, there is a chance that City fans will however be moved into the terrace behind the other goal.

The atmosphere at Underhill is near enough non-existent. In 3 visits I have yet to hear them create a decent atmosphere. They were near enough silent throughout the game but other than that, it's a pretty enjoyable day as most of their fans are reasonably friendly.

Specifically around the ground there isn’t a lot to do, but the town centre is just a short walk down the road. However, this again doesn't offer a lot of things to do other than a few cafes and a very substandard array of shops, ranging between pound shops, charity shops and used item shops.

In terms of pubs, the nearest that permits away supporters is the Old Red Lion, this is situation behind the north entrance to the ground. This is a fairly decent All the other towns seem to be around the town-centre area. In terms of getting to the ground, if you’ve got a sat-nav then it will probably be your best friend.

There isn't any street-parking available around the ground due to the streets being permit only, so your best bet for parking is go to the nearby tube station and park there. It’s £1 and your car is far more secure than it would be parking it on the streets around the ground. There aren’t many ways to get there by roads, the easiest is to leave the M25 at J23. Take the A1081 towards Barnet. Follow this road for about 3 miles. Continue towards Barnet and the ground is at the bottom of Barnet Hill.

The train times on your left are all based on catching the train to New Barnet station (you can alternatively choose to go to High Barnet Underground Station). Numerous trains have been added on to this journey in the recent past, the ones you can see on your left are a selection that are availble.

All journeys require 3 changes, they require you to go down to Peterborough and get the First Capital Connect to to Hitchin, from there catch a different First Capital Connect to Welwyn Garden City and then yet another FCD, this time get on the one that ends up at Moorgate Underground, getting off in New Barnet.

The return train also runs on a regular basis. The ideal one is the one listed as it gives you plenty of time to return to New Barnet station. If you purchase tickets on the day then this will set you back £52.70, tickets are much cheaper if you buy them in advance. The ground is a 20/25 minute walk from here so it’s probably best to get a taxi.

If you choose to go via the underground, then you will end up at the station where people can park for £1.
