The rest of the opening stages were quiet but City were well on top of the game and Lee Beevers had a good chance that went wide on the 18 minute mark. Chester took the ball down the other end of the pitch and Kerr fouled Holroyd in the area and a penalty was awarded to the visitors. Holroyd stepped up for the penalty and it appeared that Marriott had let it in despite going the wrong way, however, it did stay out of the goal as Marriott saved his first penalty since this calendar year.

Hessey was booked for a foul on Green on the edge of the Chester box, Jeff Hughes fired the resulting free kick over. John Danby had to just stand still in order to catch Stallard’s weak effort. Neither side managed to get in another decent chance as the teams went into the break in a stalemate.

Chester created the first chance of the second half, but Jamie Hand’s long range effort went straight to Marriott. Nat Brown headed a Frecklington corner wide before Brown prevented Stallard from heading goal wards by heading the ball out of the striker’s path.

Dean Bennett was booked for Chester as the hour mark approached. A mistake in the Chester defence saw Stallard and Forrester break through 2-on-1 with the final defenders, Forrester drew the final defender and played a pass to Stallard, the striker had all the time in the world to place the ball past Danby and score the Imps’ first goal since the away game at Darlington 4 weeks ago.

A few minutes later and Simon Yeo entered the game for Chester, receiving a mixed reaction from City fans whilst he replaced Holroyd. City had a great opportunity to extend the lead when Green and Hughes linked up well with Frecklington, but the midfielder sent his cross straight to Danby.

Yeo had a chance blocked just before both sides made substitutions. Bennett was replaced by Gronin for Chester, whereas Mendes came on for Green for the Imps. A linesman’s flag prevented Yeo from claiming a goal against the Imps following a corner. Ryan Amoo replaced Frecklington for City.

Following a City corner, City were awarded a penalty when a Chester hand prevented the ball entering the net. Forrester stepped up and scored his first goal since March an gave the Imps a 2-0 victory. City now travel to Bristol Rovers next week.
