City started the game well and Lee Frecklington had the first attempt of the game but his effort didn’t trouble Ingham in the Wrexham goal. Marriott had equal ease as he kept a cross from reaching Kevin Smith. It was a slow start to the game and a 10th minute corner wasn’t cleared properly by the Wrexham defence but Forrester couldn’t punished as his header was too weak to rouble the keeper. Johnson then fired wide for the hosts.
Forrester then gave Frecklington a great chance to open the scoring by putting him through one-on-one with Ingham but Frecklington’s first touch was very poor and fell back to a defender. Slack marking from City allowed Llewelyn to head goalwards and only an acrobatic save from Marriott kept the scores level.
City were controlling the game but just like at Port Vale a few weeks ago, Wrexham scored very much against the run of play and in highly fortunate circumstances. Mark Jones fired a shot goalwards but it was heading well wide before a heavy deflection sent the ball over a helpless Marriott and into the net and it summed up all of City’s bad luck recently.
Loan signings Eaden and Birley produced a passing move that saw the latter break down the right and send in a cross, Shaun Pejic had little trouble clearly the ball as Mark Stallard was putting in a less than convincing performance. Marriott did well to save from a Wrexham free kick bout 40 yards out. From the resulting corner, the defence decided to take a break from doing their job and a header that was heading wide was controlled by Llewelyn and he played the ball across the box but Marriott’s back leg got in a way and diverted a cross into a shot and the ball went over the line for an O/G (despite it being credited to Llewelyn, it wasn’t going in on it’s on so it’s an O/G).
Then 2 controversial decisions denied City the chance to equalise. The first was when Forrester shot and one of the Wrexham defenders tried to imitate the goalkeeper and did a diving handball in the area but the referee waved play on. Forrester was involved in the second when he was just to be offside when put through by Frecklington despite the striker having 3 defenders keeping him onside. That was the final incident of the first half.
Marriott almost gifted the Welsh a 3rd goal as early in the second half, Jones tried his luck from distance and Marriott decided to punch the ball with both hands for not reason and it hit the bar on it’s way to going out for a corner. It was a very slow start to the second half but Wrexham had a penalty claim just after the hour mark but the referee judged the Wrexham player to be diving and waved play on.
Soon after and Mark Stallard actually did something. Nat Brown had replaced Moses a few minutes before and within a minute, he was watching on Stallard running onto a misplaced pass by a Wrexham defender and smashed the ball in from just outside the area to bring the Imps back into it. Just a minute later and he could have equalised when Forrester burst down the right and crossed the ball, it landed at Stallard’s feet and despite having time on his side, he took a first time shot and it went just wide of the post but never realistically looked like going in.
City were once again on top and Frecklington’s header grazed the post as it went wide with 15 minutes to go. He again wasted another good chance when a free kick found its way to him on the edge of the area and despite being unmarked, he side his volley well into the crowd. Gritton replaced Nicholson for the Imps before with just a few minutes left, Morgan replaced Frecklington who had injured himself minutes later.
Wrexham thought they’d scored a 3rd when Lee McEvilly broke free but he shot wide but didn’t notice and started celebrating before noticing the ball hadn’t gone in the net. That was the final incident of the game and City slipped one place to 3rd.
