Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle v Huddersfield Town

By Tyne-Talk
August 26 2009

Newcastle United host Huddersfield Town this evening in the 2nd round of the Carling Cup. Early team news suggests that Steve Harper could be rested allowing Tim Krul to make his home debut, after playing 2 games previously both away from home.

Newcastle are likely to rely on youngsters Tamas Kadar, Ryan Donaldson, Kazenga LuaLua and Haris Vuckic, seeing a few make their senior debuts as a result of such a thin squad.

Chris Hughton is without Joey Barton who is struggling with a foot injury and Andy Carroll misses out through a groin injury.

If Steven Taylor features in tonight's match he could make his 150th start. If he doesn't feature then speculation is likely to increase over his future at the club, after being linked with several Premier League teams over the last few weeks.

Danny Simpson is hoping to start and is keen for a long Carling Cup run.

Huddersfield Town, managed by former Newcastle United player Lee Clark is without winger Gary Roberts who the FA have announced will serve a 3 match ban for violent conduct, beginning tonight.

However, Clark will be hoping to see Jim Goodwin back in contention for a place after recovering from knee surgery which has kept him out so far this season.

Fact: - Out of 59 meetings between the 2 clubs, Newcastle have won 24, Huddersfield have won 20 and there have been 15 draws.

From the official site:

NUFC: Tim Krul, Ryan Taylor, Jose Enrique, Tamas Kadar, Danny Simpson, Geremi, Kevin Nolan, Nicky Butt (c), Danny Guthrie, Kazenga LuaLua, Nile Ranger

Subs: Steve Harper, Alan Smith, Jonas Gutierrez, Shola Ameobi, Ben Tozer, Ryan Donaldson, Haris Vuckic

I would assume Nicky butt is going to be Center Back.
Krul
Simpson Butt Kadar Enrique
Taylor Nolan Guthrie Geremi
Ranger Lua Lua

Or Nolan in the hole and Lua Lua in the middle?

Yah, the line is 1-2. Guthrie scored, and they immediately followed (30 seconds max) with a long ball that was then rolled between Krul's legs. A minute later, krul took down their striker, got a yellow and a penalty against him which was converted.

YOU DO THE AMEOBI AND YOU SHAKE ABOUT!

got to mention this mate cos i know you like the song...
a footy based tv show in the uk used to have a section called 'taxi', where they would show an embarrassing clip featuring a footballer mis-kicking, or falling down, or whatever, followed by a sarcastic voiceover 'taxi for...bramble!' or whoever it was (complete with NYC taxi clip and themetune from the sitcom). the shola song was sang like this:
woah shola ameobi TAXI!
woah shola ameobi TAXI!
woah shola ameobi TAXI!

Hopefully the injuries won't be bad. Saw the goals on Sky, Guthrie's was good and Geremi goal was a good team goal

either that or hughton is highlighting the risk of having such a small squad again.

Just got home from work, glad to hear we got the 4-3 without going to Extra Time. There's certainly an awful lot of bad news regarding this match: Kadar and Krul showed their true colors, Shola and Jonas might be injured, nearly got beat by a team a division below us.

On the bright side, coming back from 3-1 showed some excellent fighting spirit that we've been lacking for a long time. I think we're more used to be on the wrong end of a 4-3 match.

Also, the fact that we're getting goals from the midfield is sensational. Last season we only got 11 goals from the midfield. Eight of those came from players not with the team anymore (Duff - 3, Lovenkrands - 3, Milner - 1, N'Zogbia - 1), and Barton's only goal was a spot kick. This season, we have 5 already not counting Duff's goal against West Brom (2 from Nolan, 1 from Taylor, Guthrie, and Geremi).

Lastly, it showed that we can still get some contribution from Geremi. He had two good chances on goal in the first half from corners, and he got the lifeline goal in the second half. I personally had left him for dead, and I think almost all of us had.

Kadar and Krul may have played bad but it was one game. F@c#ng hell most people wanted Harper dropped after the West Brom game and Krul to be the number 1.

Lets give them more time on the pitch, by hand picking the games otherwise we will be f@ck#d when we need to pick them for the pressure games at the top of the division. The squad is small so the kids are going to be playing regular for us, give them some more games

Its good to see the midfield scoring, and if nolan stayed then you could easy see him getting around the 15 goal mark and somebody like Guthrie would get a fair share with a decent run in the team.

Yeah, I wouldn't get too worked up yet-except about the injuries. A mantra I've developed following various sports for 20 years is: young athletes are inconsistent, period. So I'm not that worried about the kids' performances. As Hughton pointed out, a bad day at the office can be a learning experience.

On the other hand, waffles, when it comes to Geremi I only want to know one thing. Did he run effectively throughout his performance? He won't forget how to strike a ball, but if he has no legs he's useless. We do need to keep in mind that this was a lower-division team and that Geremi has been a top flight player for the vast majority of his career.

The commentators made it sound like he was making some good runs down the right wing towards the corner flag and linking up with Ryan Taylor and Nolan very well at least for the first 30 minutes or so. I don't know if Geremi was working hard for the full 90, as I left at the 65th minute to go to work. His goal showed good touch on the ball from short range, but he had to make a run down the middle to get the ball in the first place. His first two chances were due to rising in the box for a header (the second of which was a clear header it sounded like).

Can he give us a solid 90 minutes every week? Probably not. Are his wages too high? Definitly. Are we going to be able to sell him? Probably not.

I'd love to get him off the wage bill, but I don't think it's likely. If we have to hold onto him, it's nice to know that he's a viable option off the bench for 30 minutes and as a make shift starter when the injuries and suspensions start adding up.

You have to look at the big earners they are performing and there are reasons:

(1) Hughton may be a amazing coach that gets the best of them.
(2) They are in a division that suits them
(3) They know the window shuts soon and are looking for a move.

To me it is the last one, lets be honest they were all sh@t last season and didn't care, it proved that on the last day how many were upset. If we get a bid they will go

i think you may have the answer with number three TTID, but i'll throw in a number 4 anyway...

4) the squad is more harmonious for the removal of certain overpaid non-tryers who left this summer, and so are more willing to fight for each other

4 sounds right and maybe 1 from toontillidie i think that chris has created the siege mentality jfk wanted to have but could not get. i am not jumping on the give him the job band waggon but another 10 games down the line with similar results we will have to stand up and give him his dues maybe even our support to take it on full time
