Hughton - We Have Papered Over The Cracks

Newcastle United caretaker manager Chris Hughton has finally said what we are all thinking, that the current squad is too small to successfully compete in the Championship with an additional 8 games to the Premier League as well as the cup games alongside it.

Tonight Newcastle face Huddersfield in the 2nd round of the Carling Cup with at least 5 youngsters likely to play a part. Hughton lost 10 players this summer, the majority featuring heavily in the first team last season.

Hughton told The Chronicle;

"What has papered over (the cracks) is we've been very fortunate with injuries and haven't really had more than two at any given time, which is very unusual.

Consequently we've been able to cope but there will be a time when that changes. We're quite strong in midfield but we need possibly two or three new faces provided no-one else leaves."

Hughton is desperate to bring in at least 3 new faces to cover the gaps created over the summer; however he has admitted he doesn't know who to ask, with the club allegedly on the brink of being sold.

He added;

"There's no doubt the club will have the final say on who goes out.

I can only reiterate what I've said - I would be happy to keep the squad we have at this moment (and add to it)."

The club constantly papers over the crack but good on Hughton for coming out saying it. Ashley needs to listen and bring in some players

In our position I think we'll only be able to sign players on loan, so I'm not sure the transfer window is an issue (you can loan players outside the window if you're a lower league team, like us). The only thing we need is a striker or two with pace, and a lot more depth, we're not going to need to spend big bucks really.

Rob Earnshaw would be a good signing but if the 3 million mark is true then I think they are far better players available for that sort of cash. I thought we were skint anyway so reckon this will be paper talk as all the talks are about loan signings
