Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Crystal Palace v Newcastle

By Tyne-Talk
August 22 2009

Newcastle travel to Selhurst Park for a 3pm kick off on the back of two consecutive wins against Reading and Sheffield Wednesday, whilst Crystal Palace seek their second consecutive win of the season having beating Ipswich 3-1 in their last league game. Newcastle United’s Shola Ameobi and former Newcastle player Darren Ambrose both go into the game having scored 4 goals a-piece so far this season. Newcastle welcome back Nicky Butt who will be re-instated as captain after he recovered from a hand injury, whilst midfielder Joey Barton will be absent despite returning to light training this week from a foot injury.

Striker Andy Carroll will undergo a late fitness test after picking up a groin strain in midweek but has been told he has a 50% chance of playing.

Summer signing Danny Simpson is hoping to start, as is Danny Guthrie, whilst youngsters Tamas Kader, Kazenga LuaLua, Nile Ranger and Ryan Donaldson are all likely to be on the bench after being warned by caretaker manager Chris Hughton to expect to play a big part in the club's season.

Palace manager Neil Warnock is without striker Stern John (elbow) but Darren Ambrose (shoulder) is likely to start as is keeper Julian Speroni after they both played through the pain barrier to finish Tuesday's game.

Fact: Today's game will be Shola Ameobi's 200th League Appearance.

Fact: A 3rd consecutive win for Newcastle will be their best start to a league campaign in 14 years, as well as their 1st away win since February.

Referee: Andy D'Urso

Shola Ameobi's 200th League Appearance, lets get another hatrick to celebrate.

Tough game down south today, Palace won't be easy. wondering if Butt goes straight back in the team and if that is the case who will get dropped, maybe Xisco will get a start with Carroll possibly out.

I reckon:
Harper
Simpson, Taylor, Colo, Enrique
Nolan, Butt, Smith, Jonas
Ameobi, Xisco

with Nolan out wide, but would rather see Butt on the bench with Guthrie out wide and Nolan in the middle don't think it will happen though

I think Shola wil be really up for it today, what better way to celebrate his 200th League Appearance than by scoring a goal.
I'm going with 2-1 to us. I wish Darren Ambrose was on our side though.

C'mon Shola (Sm152)

I never thought I'd be saying that.

Hah, did anyone hear that jab at Hull the BBC London guys just made?

2 goals early. Gotta love having goals from the midfielders, something we didn't have at all last year.

Sounds like Colo is getting beat over and over again by Freddy Sears though.

Butt for R. Taylor
Ranger for Guthrie

Not sure how I feel about these changes. Sounded like Guthrie, Ryan Taylor, and Nolan had been playing well together. Guthrie might still be less than 100% though.

We'll be back to third by the end of Sunday night if Cardiff wins. Regardless, I'll gladly take 3rd place with a 2-0 win in London.

I hear you CND. Really good start and we have played some of the better sides. Warnock's sides really try to stick it up you and it sounded like we handle them.

Im sure we all feel the same that we need to keep our feet on the ground, hopefully the takeover will be sorted one way or another. Then we can sign a few experienced players and some young loan ones.

I think if we can get some more experience and some of the kids from Arsenal/Man U then even if we lose some of the players that are expected then we stand a good chance. But we need atleast 4 or 5 extra players on the numbers that we already have if we are going to serious for the full season

Just saw the goals on Sky, Nolans was a typical goal that he got at Bolton, arriving un marked in the box. Taylor's goals was a quality strike and don't think anyone would have saved it
