Mikel scores!

Big John Obi Mikel scores when he wants to. Fortunately on Tuesday night, after being largely responsible for the loss of the first goal, the Nigerian midfield general did want to. He promptly finished from close range on the stroke of half time to atone for the conceded goal. Although the substitute Cavani restored their lead deep into the second half, the Blues should not be too downhearted at leaving Paris avec un away goal.

Peculiarly, Chelsea drew 1-1 here last year and were subsequently knocked out, while the year before they lost 3-1 and yet managed to progress to the last eight. Therefore, on that basis, it is difficult to call the eventual outcome of what is becoming an annual skirmish. Chelsea desperately needed an away goal and obtained one, but I'm afraid that the talented PSG are more than capable of replying with at least one of their own when they call in at Stamford Bridge in March. To say that this contest hangs in the balance for both combatants would be an understatement!

Of course Chelsea have to score in the second leg and win that fixture, so we should be spared any large dollops of bus-parking theatricality, unless the hosts grab an early goal and attempt to cling on to their one-nil advantage.

Meanwhile, it's time to prepare ourselves for the visit of Manchester Mercenaries in the FA Cup. They have twice beaten us in this competition in the last few years, so we owe them Manc wannabes.
