Even Oscar scored!

Chelsea may be struggling to land a blow in the English Premiership, but the champions of England (for that is what they still are!) have experienced much less difficulty coping with their Champions League group. Admittedly they have been thrust together with mediocre Dynamo Kiev and hopeless Maccabi Tel-Aviv. Indeed the latter acted as a punchbag again, as they soaked up Chelsea pressure, but not before they had conceded four goals in the process.

Certainly the hosts were not assisted by being reduced to ten men. Ironically, this was always likely to be a mis-match, so if anything they could have done with an extra man, and not one man less. Happily for Chelsea, there was no Mark Clattenberg officiating and giving the opposition the benefit of the doubt.

Anyhow, Willian cemented his growing reputation as European football's hottest free-kick taker. As I have stated before, a direct free kick taken by Willian is now tantamount to a penalty, and God knows we seem to be better at converting direct free kicks than penalties anyhow!

Willian's compatriot Oscar even joined in the goals spree, itself a measure of the lack of home resistance. Meanwhile, two centre halves also helped themselves to their second goal of the season, as first Gary Cahill and then young Kurt Zouma feasted on the Israeli corpse, while even Baba Rahman played quite well.

Unfortunately, this result remains something of a distortion and represents a false dawn. There are no teams in the Premiership as mediocre as Maccabi. Instead, the Blues must hit the heights on Sunday lunchtime when they pay a visit to an upwardly mobile Tottenham team. No doubt the cautious one will present Mikel with a starring role in a  desperate effort to blunt their attacking football. Of course last January they upset the odds when they conquered us, with five goals. Dear Santa, would it be too much to ask if you granted us the favour of a five goals bonanza from our impotent attack? Maybe even Hazard might finally score and Pedro might play really well. Oh sorry. I'm just hallucinating now.
