So Jose Mourinho finally decided, weeks behind the rest of us all, that changes were desperately needed for his misfiring champions. That said, he still couldn't resist hooking Loftus-Cheek off at the interval. Mourinho was so terrified that he needed to resort to 'experience' to see the job completed. Oh well, the champions won, but they were gifted a couple of goals either side of half time by a team that is even worse than us. Tis all scarcely worth getting too excited about. Still, the conquest of every mountain must begin with small steps. If the Blues can at least escape from Kiev with a share of the points on Tuesday evening, then that would be better still. Otherwise, the manager's future at the club will remain in the balance. One isolated win here and there will not satisfy Abramovich, and it doesn't convince me.
Peculiarly, the Blues have ascended the charts to a lofty eleventh and are 'only' six points off a Champions League position. If we can actually, belatedly, get our arses into gear, then a top four spot is certainly there for the taking. We are within striking distance of Evercrap, Liverpoo and Tottensham, so it is a measure of their own cosmic progress that we are poised to overtake them in the near future, yet our start has seemed infinitely worse. It's a funny old game.
