Walsall succeeded where Arsenic and Maccabi Tel Aviv failed, by finding the back of our net, but the cup holders were ultimately too strong for the plucky Midlanders. Chelsea's reward (or punishment) for safely negotiating this hurdle is another assignment in the Midlands, as a trip to Stoke-on-Trent beckons. Hopefully we can avenge that painful cup final defeat from March 1972.

Meanwhile back at the ranch, twas good to see Ramires and Remy open their goals account for the season, with the headed goal from the Brazilian something of a collector's item. Pedro came on in the second half and completed the scoring, doubling his Chelsea goals tally. However, pride of place goes to young Kenedy who recorded his first Chelsea goal (hopefully the first of many), having assisted in creating the early header for Ramires. Kenedy looked absolutely chuffed by his fine effort. Nobody can try telling him that a League Cup goal isn't important. Even Papy Djilobodji got introduced in the dying seconds, while his captain, John Terry, returned to the starting line-up, thereby chalking up his 650th club appearance. What a legend. Finally, Falcao actually played quite well, even though he didn't hit the heights in terms of scoring goals. His performance was proof that a striker can play well, without having to score. Certainly many centre forwards have scored in matches where they played quite poorly - but as Greavsie used to say "it's a funny old game."

The second of three consecutive away matches (and the second of Costa's three matches that he has been suspended from) is the forthcoming trip to St James's Park. Newcastle have been in pitiful form so far this season. The appointment of Steve McLaren has done nothing to revive the team's fortunes. However, although the Magpies were humiliated at home by Sheffield Wednesday last night, the Geordies' team are a completely different beast when Chelsea come to town. Admittedly, they don't have Alan Pardew masterminding them any more. Surely, Jose can lay the ghosts of St James's Park to rest on Saturday evening. It's time that we put them Magpies in their place. Bring it on.
