Normal business resumed for under-performing Chelsea as they proceeded, not without controversy, to another routine triumph against hyped Arsenil. One of the great peculiarities about this occasion was that Fabregas of Chelsea was attacking the goal where Cech of Arsenil was located. How weird was that?! Anyhow, it was good that our former goalkeeper couldn't help himself to a clean sheet. Of course, the fact that two of his colleagues got themselves foolishly red-carded may have had something to do with it.
The post-match storm of course surrounded the fact that Gabriel was granted an early use of the showers, while his sparring partner Diego Costa was allowed to stay on the field. Arsene Whinger, surprise surprise, was beside himself with disgust, at this apparent injustice. Of course, Mourinho just rubbed it in by suggesting that Costa was his man of the match - which may have been code for job well done for facilitating a sending off when a silly opponent took his provocative bait. The Arsenic can only have themselves to blame. It wasn't the referee who was to blame for their failings. The away team were second best when it was eleven versus eleven, and although they rallied well after going behind, their cause was hopeless when Cazorla was later compelled to take an early exit. Wenger protested that Santi is a saint and that his red card was harsh. Well, it was only a few weeks ago that Arsenic were able to profit from playing much of their trip to Newcastle against ten men. I don't recall Wenger complaining about the injustice of that occasion. Furthermore, the consensus of opinion was that Arsenil were lucky to keep their full complement of players on the pitch at Crystal Palace. Maybe luck does even itself out, eventually.
Having said all that, Diego Costa is skating on thin ice, and the media microscope has concentrated on his antics - more than anything else. As a consequence, Diego is a red card waiting to happen. Unfortunately, it will probably happen at an importune time - such as a visit to Old Trafford or Shamfield. I will be amazed if he isn't sent off before Christmas, as the media are questioning out loud how the Brazilian-Spaniard manages to play on the edge, without the referee pushing him over the edge for his multitude of indiscretions.
Meanwhile, big Kurt Zouma recorded his first Premiership goal for Chelsea and nearly ran into the Arsenil crowd, before catching himself on, and turning sharply to the delighted home support. Zouma wasn't picked up from the free kick. You can't blame Mike Dean, the referee, for that defensive howler. Then, after labouring to put the contest to bed, the Blues then got a slice of good fortune in the dying minutes when a Hazard shot was deflected into his own net by Callum Chambers.
The champions of England may have suffered a poor start to the season, but two wins and two clean sheets inside a week are signs of progress. Now three away fixtures are next on the agenda. There are banana skins everywhere we look, and we are still the club everyone hates and wants to beat. After all, you have to be good to be hated! No-one ever feared or got anxious about mid-table teams. In the end, the recently beleaguered Mourinho had the last laugh. He stated that he had to take his recent defeat to Evercrap on the chin, and that Monsieur Wenger should do likewise. Jose claimed that derbies are as much about "emotional control" as anything. He's probably right. Arsenil were guilty of the same old naivety. They never seem to learn. They can cherish their little Community Shield victory, but ultimately, they are still no match for Chelsea, the best team in London.
