Blues Narrowly Oust Wanderers

A second-string Chelsea team made hard work of overcoming Bolton Wanderers as they progressed to the last sixteen of the Capital One Cup. There were a multitude of chances created, but only two were converted. Congratulations to Kurt Zouma for opening his Chelsea goals account and to Oscar for providing the second half winner.
However, for all of Chelsea's dominance, the hosts look slightly toothless in the absence of the lethal Diego Costa. Of equal alarm is the fact that after seven competitive fixtures this season, the Blues have only acquired one clean sheet. Oh yes, the regular flow of goals has been a real tonic for the supporters, but they have clearly come at the cost of defensive solidity. Even the great Petr Cech could not add to his huge collection of shut-outs. He did at least deservedly captain the team to success tonight. Their reward is a trip to the New Meadow to compete against Shrewsbury at the end of October. I suspect that Chelsea find goals easier to come by away from home, so even a star-studded reserves team should take care of Shrewsbury.
