English Football hooligans arrested ahead of World Cup

Five English football fans from the West Midlands were arrested this morning after failing to hand in their passports ahead of England's first game against the USA on Saturday. In an attempt to prevent hooliganism in South Africa fans subject to banning orders in England were required to hand in their passports as part of the operation to prevent them from travelling.

Out of the 314 football fans in the West Midlands subjected to banning orders, only 90% handed in their passports as required.  Police said that the five men arrested today, aged between 20-44 from Wednesbury, Wolverhampton and Birmingham, were just the start of a crack down on fans who had disobeyed orders.  They will appear in court next week.

In total Police in England demanded the surrender of 3,143 passports in England.  A further 9,000 fans are expected to be stopped from travelling with large scale operations at UK and European air and sea ports.
