It was so typical of Chelsea to lose meekly at mediocre Wolverhampton Wanderers and then four days later to cut the league leaders down to size. It's almost something of a Chelsea tradition to gun down the team that goes on to win the league. Hopefully this will be the case this season, as a Manchester City triumph is a lesser evil than Liverdisease or Tottensham becoming champions. Hopefully the Blues will go on an extended run of wins or at least a prolonged unbeaten sequence. Otherwise they will revert to the Chelsea of the 1990s: good at conquering the best team in the land and also equally good at conceding many points to lesser teams.

In the event, the visitors completely dominated the first half, but they shot themselves in the foot by omitting to field a specialist centre forward. Eventually, seconds before half time, Kante arrived in the penalty area to scoop a Hazard pass into the roof of the net. After the interval, the home team grew in confidence and the away team looked out of sorts. Exploiting the momentum that emerged from their lead, Chelsea found a second goal when the much-maligned David Luiz headed a corner beyond the reach of Ederson. Chelsea held on surprisingly comfortably. This was an earthquake of a result. It must not be allowed to be a one-off. Otherwise it will be deemed to be a momentary occasion of giant killing.
