A Legend Returns
Didier Drogba: hero

Me: Oi Arsene, I've got some good news for you and some bad news for you. Arsene: What's the bad news then? Me: Didier Drogba is returning to Chelsea! Arsene: Incroyable. And the good news? Is he just coaching perhaps? Me: Non, monsieur. He is 'only' going to torment Arse-nil again for one year!
Well, well, well. It's not exactly in keeping with building a team for the future, but hey-ho, the big guy is back, hee hee.
I must admit to having mixed feelings about the second coming of the lion king. Might it not have been best if he had just finished off his Chelsea career with that great penalty in Munich that finally landed us Europe's top prize? Talk about going out on a high. Now, we run the risk of seeing the great one possibly relegated to midweek trips to a lower league team in the Capital One Cup and such mundane assignments. Or, maybe Didier and Jose have hatched a fiendish plot to ensure that DD is again slotting home the winning penalty in the Champions League final of 2015?!
Of course, Drogba is not the first returning prodigal son to Stamford Bridge. I can think of at least six Chelsea players who left the club and then returned for a second stint. The gents in question were Hollins, Hudson, Le Saux, Osgood, Spackman, and Wicks. Perhaps only Graeme Le Saux was able to enhance his reputation, while the others were a pale imitation of their former selves. Therefore, history isn't exactly on Didier's side. More particularly, as he has already covered himself in glory with the Chelsea faithful, he may have trouble revisiting former glory and reproducing his vintage form. The Ivory Coast superstar will be granted a rapturous return, but will his subsequent outings merit the same favourable response? Time will tell.
Let's face it, the man with the killer touch will start the season playing second fiddle to Diego Costa. Mind you, some of us are apprehensive and suspect that Costa will prove as 'effective' as his fellow-countryman, Fernando Torres. Maybe Drogs will become a mentor for new recruit, Senor Costa (the guy who looks like a Mexican bandit). Perhaps Drogba will be the premier striker before the autumn has run its course. Let's hope that he can add about a dozen goals next season to his Chelsea collection (most probably against Arsenal, laugh out loud) and let us hope that he has a big role to play in the team's progress over the next year. At least one thing is for sure: Didier Drogba is one 'new' signing who will not be sent out on loan this forthcoming season!
