Ex-Rovers Youngster Set Sights on Conquering America

Former Rovers and Wales youngster Gerwyn Jones is making good progress in his post-Tranmere career after moving the States to team up with MLS side DC United according to local newspaper reports in his home town of Caernarfon in North Wales......
After being released by Tranmere at the end of their youth scholarships, a number of players who are deemed 'unable to progress' at the Club often fade into non-league football or perhaps away from football altogether but there is one young player whose careers appears to be on the up since leaving Prenton Park.
Defender Gerwyn Jones represented Wales at a number of youth levels during his time at Tranmere and looked impressive at times for those fans who watched the Youth and Reserve games on a regular basis.
Now the local press in his home town of Caernarfon in North Wales are reporting that the 19-year old has joined up with MLS side DC United and is progressing well as Captain of the Super 20's (Reserve) side and is also training with DC's first team squad.
The Caernarfon Herald Newspaper reports....
Caernarfon-born footballer Gerwyn Jones has joined MLS side DC United
in Washington in America.
Although yet to break into the first team, the 19-year- old is
captain of the club’s Super 20s side, and is training with the first
team squad.
The youngster was on Tranmere Rovers’ books for several years until
May of last year, but a serious back injury in February cut short his
career there.
While touring the USA with Ysgol Syr Hugh Owen in 2007, Jones was
invited to join DC United and complete his education in a nearby
university, but because he was contracted with Tranmere he was unable to
take up the opportunity.
He re-established contact with the States, and DC United had
maintained interest, but because of his injuries they were several
obstacles to overcome.
Jones was sent to a specialist in Baltimore who ascertained that
Jones had a hairline fracture in his back.
After succesful treatment he regained full fitness, and has been in
the States since August 2009 studying for a bachelors degree in business
and furthering his football career.
Total Tranmere would like to wish Gerwyn all the best in his future footballing career and we will hopefully bring further updates in future.

Never actually rated Gerwyn that highly. Always thought that Ash was a much better player. But good luck to the lad. Hope he does well and makes it out there.
No we were contacted about it a fortnight ago by e-mail but we didn't run it then and it then appeared in the Caernarfon Herald so we decided to run it just as we also got a second e-mail about it.
I don't use the Cowsheds really so I wouldn't even know if it was on there!
