Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Scunthorpe Utd
By Tyne-Talk
March 16 2010
Newcastle United host Scunthorpe United tomorrow night in the evening's only Championship game. Newcastle play on the back of two draws and four wins in their last six games, whilst Scunthorpe travel on the back of three defeats, two draws and one win in their last six.

Chris Hughton will be hoping that Fabricio Coloccini will have recovered from a dead leg in time for kick off tomorrow evening, but will make a late decision on the defender. Both Wayne Routledge (calf) and Jose Enrique are pushing for a starting place having recovered from injuries, whilst Danny Simpson is also set to return having recovered from a knock at the weekend.

Alan Smith remains sidelined with an ankle injury as does Steven Taylor (knee), Shola Ameobi (hamstring) and Joey Barton who continues to build his strength in the reserve team.

Scunthorpe could be without Gary Hooper, their leading goal scorer who is suffering with a groin injury, whilst Captain Cliff Bryne begins a five match ban having received his 3rd red card of the season.

Rob Jones and Andrew Wright who both started on the bench at the weekend will be pushing for a start and midfielder Michael O'Connor is available having served a three match ban.

Scunthorpe's only long term absentee is Ian Morris who has a knee injury.

Newcastle were defeated by Scunthorpe at the beginning of the season in the corresponding fixture but have won their last five home games (a 6th would be their longest consecutive run since 2004) and are unbeaten in their last six games.

Fact: Newcastle have lost just 1 of their last 22 league games.

Fact: Scunthorpe are just 1 of 3 teams who could still complete the doubt over Newcastle this season.

Before our match I will be keeping an eye on the matches tonight.

Barnsley v Forest and Swansea v West Brom. Fingers crossed for the home teams. Barnsley are no mugs at home and Forest have lost their way a little. They have also a few players out tonight.

Swansea have the best defence and West Brom are the top scorers.

Forest lost 2-1, but West Brom won 2-0, another f00king penalty for them. They get more than their fair share.

Re: Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Scunthorpe Utd
Obviously want to go up as Champions but this, again, is a huge result.

Just doing a bit of working out,

We dont catch up with our game in hand on Forest until 13th April so thats almost like a back up against them. Big If but if we take full points from our next three then beat Forest at home that will put us 15 clear of them. Thats is if they take full points from their next two games but they are both at home.

That would leave Forest with 6 games left so obviously a maximum of 18 points.

I can almost taste the Premier

Re: Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Scunthorpe Utd
Who said Forest was due for a bad run a few weeks back? Was it TTID, LMK, or Tunyc? I hate admitting that any of those three are right, but kudos to whoever called it.

Forest has three tough games left: At SJP, hosting Cardiff, at Blackpool. With 18 points from the other six and 4 points out of those 3 fixtures, they'd finish with 86 points.

If Forest drop any points at Bristol (distinct possibility), we could potentially lock up promotion on March 29th.

He was looking to score for sometime now. Good for him. He's been solid for us all season and got us through a time when no one else was scoring.

Re: Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Scunthorpe Utd
Just in from the match. Scunny are prob the worst team I've seen this season at SJP but we didnt sit back too much.

First half we really passed the ball well and it could have been 6 or 7.

Harper had next to nothing to do.

Simpson did a couple of daft mistakes late on but was canny. Colo and Jose business as usual and 'one size' was huge and won everything that came his way in the air.

Jonas was full of running and Im unsure if his goal was offside. Nolan was full of running and Routledge was again class setting Loven's goal up.
Wasim you would not have been disappointed, Guthrie was again class, driving us forward. He really has taken his chance to shine in the middle.

Loven was again making those runs that create so much space for others and his finish was top draw. He went off injured so hope its not long term.
Carroll was an absolute beast and never stopped running. His header was a bullet from a fair distance out and his second was a cheeky chip.

Top three players were 3/Rout 2/Guthrie 1/Carroll.

Carroll has really impressed me lately and not just for his goals. He has taken his chance with both hands and since being locked up looks like he has knuckled down. Dont want too much pressure on the lad but he could be massive for us in the Premier next season IF we get promoted. He could give CB's in the premier a hard time and his heading ability is top draw at both attacking and defending.

Professional performance. Clever subs from Hughton as well with protecting Jose and Carroll.
Well done lads.

Some lads on another site were saying that Lovenkrands was limping after the Boro game as well. I think he's been playing with a knock for a while now, but it's crunch time for our promotion campaign as well as his World Cup chances.

If people have got slight niggles then we can rest them Forest are going to drop points, and having them fully fit for the Forest game is important. Another great game and great to know we out classed Scunny.

Well done to the lads we are nearly there
