Newcastle v Liverpool Review

Obertan battling Allen

Once again United fans witnessed defeat and a sending off at Anfield as United had another night to forget as the season continues to implode. Moussa Sissoko was sent off, adding to the 4 other players, Shola Ameobi, Paul Dummett, Fabricio Coloccini and Joey Barton in seeing red in recent seasons, although he was lucky not to receive a straight red for a nasty challenge on Lucas.

But there were some good chances created and squandered by John Carver's side that could have levelled the scores at the end of the first half after Liverpool had taken an early lead. Perez then had a fine header saved by Simon Mignolet and Mehdi Abeid side-footed narrowly over as the visitors enjoyed a mini purple-patch just before the break.

Taylor had a performance to forget aswell as Mike Williamson and it was the central defender who couldn't deal with a ball into the box and when it fell to Joe Allen, he swivelled and hit it past Krul with 70 minutes on the clock. Five defeats in a row leave United stuck on 35 points and what appeared to be a safe gap above the bottom three is now nine points with six games remaining.
