Burgess Retires Leaving Rovers in Limbo

Striker who signed in the summer calls time on his playing career leaving Rovers a target man down as new season approaches…….
Tranmere Rovers have today announced that they have terminated the contract of striker Ben Burgess who only signed for the Club a few weeks ago and has only played ninety minutes of pre-season football, featuring in the first half against both Cammell Laird and Heswall last week.
The 30-year old striker joined the Club this summer from Notts County after a loan spell at Cheltenham Town last season which saw him reach and play in the League Two play-off final butpart way through pre-season it seems that Burgess has decided to retire from football leaving Rovers and Manager Ronnie Moore very much in the lurch with two weeks to go until the first competitive game in the Capital One Cup against Chesterfield.
Speaking about today’s news, Ronnie Moore said…..
“I’m obviously disappointed that it hasn’t worked out with Ben but it isn’t a decision he will have made easily and it is one we have to respect. Ben feels he is unable to play at 100% and doesn’t want to carry on at less than his best.”
“He’s been a model professional while he has been here and I wish him the best of luck in his new life outside of football.”
“It leaves us with a gap to fill up front but we’ve already started working on it and hope to bring in a replacement as soon as possible.”
Burgess himself added….
“I’d like to thank everyone at Tranmere Rovers and I’m really sorry it hasn’t worked out.”

They aren't really the same player and I assume we will be looking for another target man but Jeffers may sign anyway I suppose.

Burgess has retire and now were looking for target man.
Would tehoue be a target man.Otherwise we may have to spend money or get an extended loan player who has done preseason work

Unbelievable! talk about landing us in it just before the season is due to start! God knows what rubbish we will end up with now! Be great if we could push the budget a tad and try & get Ryan Lowe but doubt that will happen. Seems crazy now to have let Enoch go!

Heard we are bringing Stan Collymore out of retirement to play up front.
Sad to see a player retire, but I have to ask this question...
How the hell did he get through a medical?
Questions need to be asked if a player who has been out injured 2 years passes a medical, then doesn't train, and retires a few weeks later.

I had my doubts about Burgess but at least he had a reasonable track record. This leaves a real mess. I just hope that RM does not see Jeffers as the easy answer. His record has been consistently poor and he has not done enough pre-season to provide reason to set it aside.
With the exception of Wallace, none of the other signings look anything other than speculative.
It is difficult to think that a worthwhile forward is likely to be available so hopefully a loan might be brought in.
I also hope that in the run up to the season RM assesses the potential of some of our younger players to step up rather than just looking at arag bag of trialists

At least he had the decency to retire, not sitting on the bench or treatment table seeing out his contract.
lobby ludd i have to totaly agree with you atleast we now know we need to sign to forwards rather than just the one forward maybe we could have a look at the budget and maybe get a couple of thousand together and get ian hume in on loan as i think he is still under contract am not to sure tho what his situation is if not maybe we could have alook round see whats out there

I don't see why he should get paid for retiring, someone like that should only get paid, if their contract is cancelled, because Tranmere percieve them to be inadequate and give them the Mclaren and Ricketts style treatment. So I suspect he won't have been paid.
Jeffers to me would be worth signing, but not as a direct replacement, but as one of two new forward signings.
Tehoue appears to have had past issues working with Russell Slade, which may account for his wikipedia stats. Potentially tactics and or relationship with Slade, being a reason why his stats, (assists not included), look humble.
However after one game, I would not let him sign. I'd expect him to play another 1-2 friendlies, before Ronnie makes a decision, especially as it looks like Bell-Baggie will now get signed, as one trial game is not enough in most cases, to base a signing on.
I suspected early on, that due to his past connections to Bell-Baggie, Ronnie was probably about 90% certain of this move and it looks likely now, so hopefully it's not one where his heart has ruled his head and he signs a player who turns out to be a 40-50% consistency player. because 4-5 good games in every 10, isn't adequate enough, but hopefully if he does sign him, Bell-Baggie will prove to be a very interesting addition, with enough to contribute.
Then I ate his Liver.......... with some baked beans and a can of coke.

Leaves a big gap for Ronnie to fill, as no doubt he'll want to sign another target man as he loves the little and large partnership. Be interesting to see who he brings in because there's little time available now and far fewer players too.

Makes me wonder if that was his plan all along, as he says in the Liverpool Echo the other day he got loads of stick off the us when we played them at our place last season and some of it was more than just banter?!... bit of a @#$%& if you treat a club thats just given you a chance like that.

Goody up front,now theres an interesting option! Every time he was pushed up in attack he caused mayhem,scored the odd goal and went close a few times too.He held the ball up well and competed in the air.....not a bad idea....could get 15 goals in the season.It would be exciting seeing Goody giving his all but sadly it won,t happen.....will it????

I'm sure Taylor could do a job up front. Good solid centre back; useless in midfield, but knows where the goal is and can put himself about a bit.

I seem to remember we tried converting a centre half to a centre forward before, some years ago. A guy called Moore I think... can't remember how it worked out.
But it's a real long shot. Sure they could put themselves about and be a nuisance OK, but holding the ball up and putting it in the net. That's a completely different skill set.

we never seem to get anything right at this club, i know we dont have the dosh but some other clubs do better than us with the same ammount of revenue, shame we cudnt off got ian moore out of retirement he cud of got fit by now, just hope we find a decent forward now who can bang in at least 15- 20 goals this season ???? we can only dream
I've been advocating Goodison upfront for a while now, but it wouldn't happen, even though he sneaks up in the end of games and prods home. He scored 6 the season before last and he probably only played about 2 hours of football in an advanced position all season, if that. On those kind of scoring ratios we could have a 100 a season target man

are we that desperate that we are considering the possibility of Goody up-front? A 40 year old centre half! Jesus! Being linked with Donaldson but he's on trial with Carlisle so who knows who he will bring in!
I see Ryan Lowe could be on his way to Mk dons that's another possible target gone cause I can bet they can pay better wages than us
