Rovers Fans Prepare for Charity Super-Marathon

Four Rovers fans and three friends from the armed forces are set to run a 40 mile, two day course to raise money for ‘Scotty’s Little Soldiers’ – a charity set up in memory of a soldier killed in Afghanistan.....
As Rovers kick-off their League One game against Coventry City in mid-September, four Rovers fans plus three friends from the armed forces will embark on a gruelling challenge to raise money for a charity set up in memory of a soldier tragically killed in Afghanistan.
Rovers fans Alan Knell and Mike Catterall plus two fellow season ticket holders will team up with three friends from the armed forces to run a 40 mile course around the Wirral over two days, starting from Prenton Park before the kick-off of the Tranmere v Coventry game on Saturday 15th September and returning to Prenton Park the following day via an overnight camping stop.
The first day of the challenge will see the guys run 23 miles from Prenton Park to Parkgate via New Brighton, the top of the Wirral peninsula and West Kirby before camping for the night on the pitch at Neston Cricket Club. During the Saturday evening at Neston, there will be a charity auction of some sports related items with the proceeds also going towards the charity.
The Sunday will see the team complete a further 17 miles from Parkgate, this time travelling via the Wirral Way to Hooton and then via Eastham to Prenton Park making a total of 40 miles.
Speaking to Total Tranmere, Alan Knell who is the regional co-ordinator for the charity said.....
“Scotty's Little Soldiers is a charity set up by the widow of Cpl Lee Scott after he was killed in Afghanistan. The Charity helps support the children of our fallen armed forces personnel and we have just opened our first holiday home for families to retreat when times get hard.”
“The lads are that are running are four Tranmere fans, and three Army lads (one from the TA and the other two from the Royal Welsh). We are also running for fallen friends as my mate was sadly killed in an IED strike on his vehicle in June.”
“I had played football with him every Sunday for five years and his girlfriend was pregnant when he went on his first tour, but sadly he never got to meet his daughter who was born in July. The two lads from the Royal Welsh also lost a good mate in June. He was shot dead in Afghanistan and he left behind his wife and two year old daughter Millie.
“By chance, the lad that was killed was a Coventry City fan and there are a few Coventry fans coming up early on matchday to give us a send off so it will be a top day to see two sets of fans unite for a good cause. We also hope to make collections before the Coventry game in the Mersey Clipper and Prenton Park pubs with the Coventry fans wanting to help us out as well.”
