The first of our new weekly feature which seeks to create the Tranmere Rovers Team of the Decade for the noughties looks at the poll to determine the best goalkeeper to play for the Club between 2000 and 2009...........
For the next seven days, you have the chance to have your say in the first of our 12-part series which look at the best Tranmere Rovers team of the noughties.
Position by position we will give you the chance to vote on who you think is the best Rovers player (2000-2009) and tonight we begin with the poll or the best goalkeeper of that era.
The candidates for Goalkeeper are as follows.....
John Achterberg
A servant of the Club for the whole of the decade and no doubt a favourite to win the goalkeeper’s poll, Achterberg joined Rovers in 1998 and finally retired from playing in 2009 thus taking in a trip to Wembley for a major final, numerous cup upsets, a play-off semi-final defeat and a couple of relegation escapes during an up and down Rovers career.
Danny Coyne
After his initial seven year spell with Rovers ended just before the last decade began (in 1999), Coyne returned to Tranmere in 2007 and played another full season for the Whites before accepting an offer that a player of his age could hardly refuse – a two year contract in the Championship with Middlesbrough.
Luke Daniels
Only at Rovers for one season on loan but impressed in his time at Prenton Park, Daniels played during the 2009-10 season in which Rovers just escaped relegation although that is no reflection on the performances of Daniels.
Joe Murphy
Like Achterberg, Joe Murphy was part of the Rovers squad that took the memorable trip to Wembley in 2000 for the League Cup final and despite Achterberg playing in the majority of the games in that Cup run, it was the Irish keeper who took his place in the starting eleven at the Twin Towers.
Gavin Ward
Perhaps not popular with all Rovers fans by the end of his Rovers career, Ward did produce a memorable moment when he netted from some 70 or more yards into his own half against Leyton Orient at Prenton Park.
