Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Leicester City v Newcastle Utd

By Tyne-Talk
January 29 2010

Newcastle United will be sporting fresh legs when they travel to Leicester City for tomorrow evening's match with 5 new signings under their belts. Newcastle have won just two of their last six games, securing three draws with just one defeat, whilst Leicester host on the back of three defeats from six games, one draw and two wins.

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson will be hoping that the club receives International clearance for former Newcastle United player Nolberto Solano, after the Peruvian began training with the club last week. Pearson is also likely to give 40 year old Chris Powell some pitch time after he made his first start for the club in midweek.

City will be without Bruno Berner who has returned to training from a calf injury but is unlikely to be fit to play.

For Newcastle, Chris Hughton has several first team injuries. Steven Taylor could be absent for up to two months with a knee injury, whilst Jose Enrique pulled up with a hamstring injury in midweek and could be out for several weeks.

Shola Amoebi (shoulder) and Danny Simpson (ankle) are both unavailable, whilst Jonas Gutierrez is expected to return from an ankle complaint.

Hughton will be expected to name Fitz Hall and Patrick Van Aanholt in his squad as well as naming Mike Williamson and Wayne Routledge.

for this match i'd like to see

harper
raylor colo williamson kadar
routledge smith nolan jonas
carroll lovenkrands

i do want to see guthrie in the middle, but lets not change to much at once, given the new back four and routledge.
subs include guthrie ranger and aanholt all getting onto the pitch, barring injuries

I agree with your team lmk. Was also thinking of playing Guthrie in place of Lovenkrands but you make a good point about their being too many changes too soon. Plus Lovenkrands has pace so along with Routeledge and Jonas we could use that to our advantage on the break. All in all its just great to have some options again.

Strong team but would like to see Guthrie get a run out but I think he will start the new lad from Chelsea instead of Kadar

I here you about not changing too much with a newish back line but maybe for that reason I would go with Guthrie in the middle with Nolan just off Carroll. This would allow the added protection of Guthrie and a five man midfield when needed.

Either way I have a good feeling about tomorrow. Williamson should give us the aerial edge should Howard play as he can out himself about.

The same team for me other than that. Think Kadar should start as he has canny and could do with the games. Will be good for his confidence if he keeps his place.

I like the lineup, lmk...but I'd start Guthrie over Nolan, especially if we are going 4-4-2. Wouldn't slot in Van Aanholt directly...

it seems as if we usually go 4-4-1-1 with nolan just behind the striker when playing away. perhaps with 2 real wingers in the squad tomorrow we can cause real damage.

I am looking forward to the game especially with it being on TV. I reckon we will do them by 2 or 3 goals. I think it will be a 4-4-2 line up and defo worth attacking them

I don't think we should change too much either.
lmk's line up looks good. Guthrie coming off the bench with fresh legs would be a good option imo.

I'm really looking forward to watching this game and seeing how well the new guys fit in.

Good luck new'uns. (Sm128)

I think its important that Kadar gets the nod at left back. He has been good when called upon and it would be a confidence booster if he starts. Plus the Chelsea lad is only expected to stay for a month so it would do Kadar more harm than good, if Van Aanholt gets a start after just signing a day ago. Van Aanholt for now should just be back up especially away from home in my opinion.

Some people have said that we're too good for the Championship and should never have been relegated.

Based on last seasons performance, we deserved relegation, but now we have the chance to prove to them we deserve Premier League football - let's storm this league!

TEAMS

LCFC: Chris Weale, Michael Morrison, Wayne Brown, Matt Oakley (c), Andy King, Matty Fryatt, Bruno Berner, Martyn Waghorn, Richie Wellens, Paul Gallagher, Jack Hobbs
Subs: Robbie Nielson, Ryan McGivern, Nobby Solano, Steve Howard, Lloyd Dyer, Conrad Logan, Danny N'Guessan

NUFC: Steve Harper, Ryan Taylor, Fabricio Coloccini, Mike Williamson, Patrick van Aanholt, Wayne Routledge, Nicky Butt (c), Alan Smith, Danny Guthrie, Kevin Nolan, Andy Carroll
Subs: Tim Krul, Tamas Kadar, Jonas Gutierrez, Peter Lovenkrands, Nile Ranger, Fitz Hall, Fabrice Pancrate

Must admit I'm disappointed with the team. I feel we'll lack creativity with Butt and Smith in the centre. Leicester are currently said to be out of form and this was the ideal opportunity to start with two proper wingers in Jonas and Routledge. Time will tell whether its the right or wrong team for today.

This just exposes how sloppy we've been with our possession. As soon as we face a team that work hard and are prepared to chase the ball out poor passing gets exposed.

Reminds me of The Weakest Link...you struggle to put a good combination together and some fcker always manages to screw it up.

We need to improve the final part of our attacking puzzle....we looked completely harmless today.

Remind me which team had 10 men again???

our players need to get used to routledge, as he may be important to us in the near future. for now, they just met him. three of that back four were brand new too (raylor included, as he hasnt played behind routledge), so the midfield werent used to the lads behind them. confidence/trust comes from shared postitive experience in team situations, ie winning games together. this should come in time, the sooner the better but lets not be too critical on day one....

not dressing up mate, just pointing a few factors out. i was no happier than you to see smith and butt together, but the way leicester played with ten men made a defensive formation sensible. i'd have liked to see butt and nolan out for jonas and loven after the red card, but maybe there are injuries to be protected. not sure why we saw pancrate today, surely he's behind both when all are fit.
as already said, we have a lot of games coming up close together, we may well see a few different line-ups game by game while injuries settle and new players gel

I have been impressed with the Gaffer this season as he has got us top of the table but when I saw the line up I thought what the hell, to play 2 holding midfielders and then Nolan pushing off the forward meant the midfield was to exposed. Playing Guthrie left wing was an stupid, not suited there and it wasn't Guthrie's fault. Give the lad a decent run out in the middle of the park.

Smith and Butt we both off the pace and even though they were down to ten men it felt we were with having Nicky on, it amazed me that Smith went off, not because he deserved to stay on but how Butt stayed on the pitch. Butt's legs are gone and we need to get rid. I am sick of having Carroll on the pitch, the team lack pace and we have a forward in Lovernkrands who can offer us that. Carroll may win balls but what else does he do. Everytime he plays we play the same way, long ball and hope for the best, we should be better than this in this division. Lovernkrands atleast looks like he will run at people.

Guthrie was dissapointing but I liked Van Aanholt and thought he would have done better with a left winger like Jonas as he could have done some inter link play. At times out of position but pleased what I saw and if we can afford him worth going after the lad for a decent back up for Enrique.

R.Taylor crossing was awful but at times saved us defensively, but lacks the pace. Colo wasn't amazing but it could have been worse. Ranger is a good prospect and either needs a good run out to get expereince in the team as he is still learning or needs to be loaned out to get the experience. I was optimistic before the game and even though we are still top I am sick of playing cr@p, I said it yesterday it is time to change the personal in the team and progress the club.

I thought the new lads looked ok, Williamson started off well but then went a bit gash but enough there to do a job, Van Aanholt looked decent. Routledge looked one of the players that was going to create things

Newcastle are easy to play against and unless we change the centre of midfield we will always will be, play a counter attack 4-5-1 or put pressure on us and play rough and we don't know what to do.

He had taken a bang against palace and with a lot of games coming up I dont think he wanted to risk him.

Think we mentioned when we were right out in front that we would be happy to win at home and draw away. Think we have been a bit spoilt as no one would have thought we would doing so well at the start of the season.

I am frustrated as the next person and couldnt believe it when I saw Butt and Smith in the middle. Why not Loven on left and Guthrie in the middle. That formation had draw all over it after not being convincing against Palace and the last few teams. We are not only missing a creative force from the CM but someone with genuine pace and the ability to drive us forward. Saying that those type of players dont grow on trees.

The new lads were good, Van got up well and like has been mentioned he could have done with Jonas in front. Williamson was impressive and dealt with every ball that was pumped in. Rout was a good outlet and really could/should have had two of their players sent off.

Did anyone see the interview with Pearson. I knew he had a bit of arogance about him but what a t.wat.

Agree 100% with TTD 4 posts above, I would play ranger ahead of Carroll especially in a 1 man attack more creative and has more or less the same heading ability.

New guys did good tbh our best two players were probably aarnholt and routlede they seemed pacey and created a bit.

Please no more playing Butt offer him a coaching roll r make him tea ladie or something his legs are gone.

Did anyone else thnk Nolan, Guthrie, in fact half the team looked knackered tonight ?

Poor poor preformance but look on the bright sidewe are still top with a little gap.

We don't score enough. That has to be fixed. Starting Butt and Smith was not going to achieve that. Maybe we should play Nolan as an outright forward.

As for Jonas-if CH wasn't willing to use him, he should not have been named in the squad.
