Wolves have not faced Grimsby at all for 23 years, and prior to that they have been drawn against each other four times in the FA Cup previously, resulting in five ties, with Wolves winning three, drawing one and losing one (in 1988). Perhaps the most significant was 87 years ago when Wolves beat the Mariners 5-0 in the FA Cup Semi Final resulting in an Old Trafford attendance of 76,962 – an all time record for the ground, a lovely stat for all Man United fans!! We lost the final to Pompey. This year, for Wolves face a League Two side for the second time in the FA Cup, uncharacteristically brushing Shrewsbury aside in the last round, though Grimsby are significantly better than the Shrews, and if they win their game in hand they’ll be in a playoff position.  

In fact, Grimsby Town go into this tie unbeaten in their last 10 matches in all competitions, and so full of confidence that they are able to cause ‘an upset’ in a vociferous and partizan Blundell Park. Don’t forget they dispatched Manchester United not so long ago. No doubt they have done their homework and if they have watched Wolves playing at the City Ground, combined with their own current form, they will believe they have a big chance. Even in their current form, Wolves will offer a stiffer obstacle than non-league Wealdstone and Weston Super Mare, Grimsby’s last two cup opponents.

With Toti and Hwang unfit to start, Edwards has said he expects Andre to be involved in some capacity in this Cleethorpes based tie. Who he actually selects will be a tough, if based purely on the last game at the City Ground. Let’s face it, it was an awful display by Wanderers, and whilst there was some evidence of decent defending, much of the performance was a shambles to include a tepid, power puff front line. Sadly the big man, little man combination of Tolu and Armstrong completely failed though it’s early day. More generally, none of the players really came out with much credit, except of course Sa, who saved our bacon more than once. Joao Gomes was poor, and Tolu demonstrated the first touch of an elephant!

That Wolves did not lose heavily at Forest is an indictment on a haphazard effort from our opponents, the draw resulting in consequences for Sean Dyche who lost his job. There are strong rumours that Vitor Pereira is next to be appointed at Forest, well, he’s a glutton for punishment, if nothing else.

It is easy to predict that Grimsby are likely to come out of the traps hard, and so our down on their luck side will probably have to weather a bit of a storm. Hopefully the back line will hold firm and provide a platform to the midfield and forward line to grab a goal or two. Performance and style counts, definitely, though the only thing that matters in this hitherto appalling season is to be in the hat for the 5^th Round.

The match has a 1.30pm kick off and covered by TNT. With trepidation I will be watching.

The usual outcome of these matches, given the difference in the league is usually a foregone conclusion but not today I fear. The squad will have to be on their mettle to avoid embarrassment and with morale probably at a low it won't take much to hand Grimsby the upper hand and with their current form and with a "tails up" attitude we could well struggle.

I’m late to the ‘party’ today. Watching the match on one screen but also keeping more than a close eye on the snowboard cross mixed race, where we won a gold.

First half complete, 0-0.

Grimsby almost scored in the first minute .

Joao Gomes hit the post.

Wolves had most of the possession,

Grimsby had more shots and should have scored towards the end with a header.

It’s scrappy, scrappy, scrappy.

It’s also muddy, muddy, muddy.

Wolves haven’t adapted to the conditions which represent some of the classic quagmirey pitches of old.

Struggling to tell who is the league 2 side, saying that the pitch is a great leveler it is awful.
Could go either way this unless we step it up.

59 minutes gone.

Armstrong missed a great opportunity early on, we’ve been playing a bit better but still scrappy.

As i write , Grimsby 0-1 Wolves with the first attempt on target! Santi latches onto a Joao cross with his knee and it’s in the back of the net!

A bit scary at times, one superb tackle from Santi at the end, but a deserved win in a very scrappy match.

I'll bet our lot had the shock of their lives when they saw the state of that pitch. Conditions like they used to be, not the manufactured Premier league. Not a classic by any means but I'll take any win going right now. I know Edwards didn't make many changes, probably because there weren't many changes he can make, but lets just stay in the Cup for as long as possible, at least it keeps the season going a bit. We all know we are getting relegated so rest players, if we must, and give others some "game time" in a league match. Anyway, job done and conditions wont be as bad as that at Wembley in May. And have we given up playing in gold and black?

Poor again but a wins a win and we are in the hat for the next round.
Saying that it wasn't a day to play pretty football on that pitch.
I played on better park pitches than that when I was a kid.😂
Let's hope for a Decent Draw.

I got up early for that rubbish , and in an omen for next year had to scratch around for a feed to avoid the shame of listening on Wolves radio.
Anyway, whoa, into 5th round (and no Baggies, Villa or Blues to play). Maybe we get a game on the hallowed Molineux turf next time and don’t have to change shirts at halftime
