Match Thread: Tottenham Hotspur vs Wolves

Two Top Talents

February 17 2024

After a very disappointing showing from Wolves at Molineux last weekend, they face a huge challenge today when they travel to the Tottenham Hotspur stadium to play Spurs.

Wolves celebrated a 2 - 1 win over Spurs at Molineux this season after a substitute appearance featuring a marvellous goal and an assist by Pablo Serabia. However it cannot be overlooked that on the day Spurs were without several of their more influential players who are likely to be playing today, such as Maddison and Richarlison who are enjoying good form so far this season. Last season Wolves fell to a 1 - 0 defeat at Spurs when Harry Kane got away from Nathan Collins to head the winner, so at least he won't need to be worried about today!!

Sadly Wolves will be without Matheus Cunha today who has had a superb impact on the team and scored important goals. Hwang Hee Chan is now fit to return to the starting line-up and is likely to do so. Otherwise Gary O'Neil has no other injury worries, unlike Spurs boss Ange Postecoglu who reportedly will be without his first choice wing backs Destiny Udogue and Pedro Porro.

Wolves will be hoping that the loss to Brentford last week was just a blip within what has otherwise been some excellent performances from the team, home and away. However today's game will clearly be a real challenge to the squad and unlikely to see the same sort of outcome as we recently witnessed at Stamford Bridge, even taking into account the success we have had at Spurs in recent seasons.

Today's game is scheduled to kick off at 3pm and will not be televised. Highlights will be available on tonight's MotD. Our referee will be the very experienced Anthony Taylor (who robbed us of two points in the home game against Newcastle with his decisions!!) with Craig Pawson on VAR duty.

This board will do its best to provide updates on the progress of the match, and members and visitors are encouraged to post their own observations and join in the conversation.

Really tough match today. I’m hoping the loss of Porro and Udogue will impact on Spurs, trying to keep a positive view on today’s prospects! If we challenge, as we did in the beginning of the second half v Brentford, then there is hope …. Recognising our first half efforts were not up to the standards recently set. Additionally we have to cut out the saft errors at the back, the poor passing out from Sa which only serves to put our defence under ridiculous pressure.

Fingers crossed that Hwang will provide impetus, if he starts, however we’re going to miss Cunha …. We did last week. Mixed views out of Molineux as to the severity of his injury, the latest suggesting perhaps not so hideous as initially thought.

Keep it solid, keep them quiet in the first 30-45 minutes, that will be a good platform today Overall, I feel gloomy about our prospects but I’ve been wrong before. A point would be terrific today, anything better would be utterly superb!!

No surprises in our starting Xl, Hwang back in as expected, and at least we have a full strength subs bench. Line-up:

We are up against a very strong Spurs team today, featuring Son, Maddison, Kulasevsky and Richarlison in attack. Royale and Davies come in for their injured players but they are also very experienced players, so we will have our work cut out in this superb looking stadium.

Bright start by Spurs gets them a corner off Max’s head, which goes back to Viccario. Dawson down hurt but should be OK

Ambitious shotby Pablo easily collected. Fabulous opportunity falls to Heang after a Nelson shot but he skies it.

Wolves are attacking at every opportunity and making some good interceptions to break up Spurs attacks. Davies shoots high over from the edge of the box.

Cheshire wolf
17/02/2024 15:23
RAN gets a right footed shot away but not enough power to beat Viccario. Lemina down hurt after being sandwiched & needing treatment. B. Eing checked for neck or head injury but looks like he should be OK. Back on the pitch now

Cheshire wolf
17/02/2024 15:25
Good attacking play by Wolves eventually ends with a high & wide shot from Neto

Cheshire wolf
17/02/2024 15:30
Toti gives away a foul on the left side just outside our area which Maddison puts in and goesforva corner on opposite side well cleared by Dawson, but another corner conceded, & scrambled clear

Cheshire wolf
17/02/2024 15:33
Another good chance for Wolves but Joao’s pass to Nelson is just too weak.

Cheshire wolf
17/02/2024 15:40
Cynical foul by Davies on Pablo gets a free kick but no punishment.
Maddison squares to Kulasevsky in the box but he fires wide.

Cheshire wolf

Into final 5 minutes of first half but there’s likely to be approx 5 added minutes. Neto breaks up left wing & gets a corner off his cross. Richarlison gives away another corner on opposite side which is headed in brillianrly by Joao Gomez from just outside the box.

Great save by Viccario off Pablo but offside anyway. Spurs attack & get a corner after a good interception by Dawson. Wolves attack nicely but Pablo puts a shot wide.

Jose collects a cross from Royal and the half time whistle goes. Wolves should have led from early on after Hwang squandered a great chance putting it over the bar, but they have gone on to frustrate the Spurs attack and lauched good counter attacks down both flanks. Excellent header into the top corner by Joao to give us the lead from our second corner, but we have attacked whenever we have had the chance very positively.

Terrific team performance in that first half, didn’t see it coming at all. Defending superbly as a team and attacking with purpose. My only complaint is that we haven’t scored more than one.

Can they keep this up for another 45? Hope so, everything crossed

Wolves struggling to get to grips with Spurs so far this half & struggling for possession. Nelson sers up Pablo again and another soft shot from him which Viccario keeps out.

Cheshire wolf
17/02/2024 16:21
Hwang has seen very little of the ball fur the game, not sure whether that’s due to poor supply or poor positioning!

Cheshire wolf

Jose down to his left brilliantly to keep outca Kulasevsky shot. Spurs keeping the pressure on though.

Yellow card for Joao for a professional foul on Royale. Maddison shoots just too high from outside the area. Wolves under the cosh hut still defending well

Excellent defensive tackle by Toti on Johnson for a goal kick. 12 mins of normal time to go and we lead by a goal. Lemina gets a shot away from a corner but collected by Viccario

Boubakar Traore replaces Hwang who has seen very little of the action in this game. Spurs playing a very high line now & we will have to hope Neto can spring another attack.

JRB. Breaks & feeds Neto but he. Pits a very tired shot high over the bar. Into final minute & holding up well. Free kick floated over & Jose collects the header. Five added minutes to play

Pedro slashes at a ball put ove.r by JRB. Before being replaced by Doc after another super performance.

And the final whistle goes and an outstanding win for Wolves to complete the double over Spurs. Two very well taken goals by Joao Gomez and some excellent defending gave us the points. Don’t think anyone forecast that result onbthe Prediction League today!! A superb performance and a superb win after last week’s disappointment.

What a terrific team performance. We throughly deserved the half time lead, what a great half. Second half was very different but after that nightmare start the lads fought and kept their shape at the back brilliantly. Football is about goals not possession stats and we created so many potential chances, some less than ideal decision making saved Spurs’s bacon from going 1-3 down at least.

What a fantastic winner, like the Baggies goal, Gomes intercepted from a corner, great ball to Neto who made Emerson look like a clown, royally so you might say, and an inch perfect pass to the advancing Gomes who struck the ball a sweet as a nut. Utterly brilliant.

Okay Spurs applied the pressure but our defensive organisation was outstanding, although Davis probably should have equalised late on. That would have been cruel. We were the better side, we really deserved the 3 points.

All throughout the final 15 minutes my pulse hit the 100’s plus. Drained and delighted in equal measures.

Well played lads, b!oody well played.

Another great 3 points on the road and a double against spurs.
Fully deserved though I think we should of put the game to bed earlier we certainly had the chances.
Neto and gomes were superb.
Perhaps we should play in red every week!

Typically just as Neto set off on the run for the second goal I lost my stream. Seen it since, great goal. I thought we were fantastic in that first half and completely deserved the half-time lead. For all Spurs possession, I never felt we were in trouble. Had to defend a lot more in the second half and the Spurs goal should never have been scored from that angle, Dawson should have done better and so should Sa although the player probably hit it before he could set himself but apart from that and the free header that Davies kindly put 10 yards wide near the end, we defended really well. That apart I thought Dawson had a good game and Semedo was particularly good. Everyone probably deserves a mention but best player has to be Gomes, not just for his goals, he was generally excellent today. Home against Sheffield United next week so, being typical Wolves, we all know what will happen One teeny weeny moan. Unless it's some contractual thing, I wish we wouldn't wear red when there's no colour clash.
