Another challenge

By Wolves
September 16 2023

Wolves' challenging start to the new season continues today when another of the Premier League favourites Liverpool come to Molineux for the early kick off game.

Wolves have only managed to accrue 3 points so far, but it must be noted that of four games played, three have been away from home and today's opponents will be the third team they have faced which are likely to be top 6 candidates at the end of the season. The loss at Crystal Palace in our last game was disappointing in light of the domination the team showed in the first half but, once again a failure to convert chances was a clear deficit.

The transfer window has finally closed and all the business has been done, however the International break led to 13 of our squad being away on duty with their countries which prevented Gary O'Neil from having good squad building time. He has however had the  opportunity to bed some of the new players into the squad, notably Tommy Doyle, Enso Gonzalez and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde, and he has given good feedback about each of them.

Wolves of course beat Liverpool iat Molineux last season, and those of us lucky enough to witness the win were shocked and delighted at the performance of our team as a time when a win was desperately needed, and to see Craig Dawson score on his debut. Most fans would believe a repeat is unlikely today, especially following the performance of ten man Liverpool at Newcastle in their last match - but miracles do happen!!

The game will kick off at 12:30pm and will be screened on TNT Sport1. Our referee will be the top official Michael Oliver kwith Paul Tierney on VAR Duty

A team line-up will be posted in the next window

This board will endeavour to provide some regular updates for those fans unable to watch the game, and board members and visitors are encouraged to post their own observations and opinions and join the conversation.

Two changes for today's starting Xl, as Hee Chan Hwang and Jean-Ricner Bellegarde get starting places, with Fabio Silva and Sasa Kaladjzic along with Tommy Doyle. Line-up:

Not got many goals in that team, in theory anyway (and previous practice!).

I suppose anything can happen

JON rings the changes again and no out and out number 9 which is a bit strange, Sasa and Fabio must surely get some game time today just hoping it's not left too late. Their forward line looks formidable so Kilman and co will have a real test this afternoon. It would be nice to have a repeat of the last meeting but improbable so let's get a damage limitation performance and maybe a point.

Excellent first involvement for Jean-Ricard Bellevarde (JRcool smiley. Cunha goes down after the slightest tug from Mac Allister which gets Mac a yellow card

16/09/2023 12:38
Great play by Neto and cross to Hwang who slots it.
Wolves 1 L’pool 0

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 12:43
Wolves hassling L’pool into mistakes, but Salah breaks and crosses for Jota who shoots high & wide

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 12:47
Good play by JRB for a corner which Lemina can’t direct on target. Neto has a real battle on with Joe Gomez on the left wing.

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 12:49
JRB breaks and feeds Neto who cuts in and shoots just wide

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 12:54
RAN doing really well against Salah so far. Wolves using the width of the pitch well, and making it very difficult for the reds to string passes together.

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 12:59
Reds break and get Jota in behind the defence. His cross is put out for a corner which is well cleared by Dawson. Neto breaks into their area but surrounded by 3 defenders & loses out. Another pass by JRB to Neto & his Ross to Chan gets a corner. Dawson meets the corner but way off target.

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 13:01
Sadly JRB opts to pas rather than shoot in the area. Semedo crosses for another corner, met by Dawson by he heads wide

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 13:04
Brilliant chance for Cunha wasted after great play by Neto again

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 13:11
Robertson crosses well from left side but Gakpo hits it very wide of our goal. Neto breaks again & crosses to JRB but his shot is blocked. Another attack down our right by reds easily collapsed by Jose Sa

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 13:15
Good Wolves possession ends with a poor decision from Lemina. Excellent pressing by Wolves forcing Allison into a wild clearance. RAN loses possession and Gomez puts a cross in for Gakpo to head over the bar.

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 13:20
Chaos and dramatic defending in the Wolves area, followed by a fine break by Cunha and a dreadful attempted shot when he really should have scored. Into 2 added minutes and now the whistle goes.

An excellent performance from Wolves gives them a one goal lead. Neto has been the star on left wing with Semedo also posing great threat down the right wing. JRB doing very positive stuff through the middle. Cunha once again making great breaks but useless in front of goal. A very surprisingly poor showing from the reds so far, but they still have dangerous players on their bench to bring on.
Wolves 1 L’pool 0

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 13:34
Luis Diaz replaces MacAllister for reds as we start again.

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 13:36
Long ball to left side out back into area by Jota & Diaz heads just wide. Their best chance so far.

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 13:37
Long run by Cunha into their area but final ball too close to Allison

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 13:44
Great block by Semedo to stop Luiz in the area for a goal kick. Nunez & Harvey Elliott ready to come on for Reds.
Wolves pressed into defending and the ball breaks to Salah whose shot is converted by Gakpo
Wolves 1 L’pool 1
Gakpo & Jota replaced by Nunez & Elliott

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 13:48
Doc & Fabio being readied. Good break down the right by Hwang & Semedo, ends with a high shot from Gomez. Doc and Fabio replace Hwang & Cunha

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 13:53
Hugo Bueno replaces RAN who has been hurt, after playing well.

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 14:00
Poor kick out from Jose Sa concedes possession and needs a great block from Max to deny Nunez. Corner proving difficult to clear. Semedo shown a yellow card for a slow throw in.

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 14:04
Michael Oliver gives a very dubious foul to reds when Lemina should have been away. Wolves getting stuck in defence at the moment and unable to get out. Biubakar Traore & Tommy Doyle being prepared to come on for Lemina & JRB.

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 14:09
Good applause for JRB as he leaves the pitch after a very good debut. Semedo’s shot blocked by Matip but no hand ball. Gomez got away with a tug on Neto.

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 14:11
Monster replaces the injured Quansar. 8 minutes plus AT to play.

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 14:14
More excellent play by Dawson to block a Diaz shot. Corner collected by Sa but a very poor clearance from him finds Robertson, to Salah then back to Robertson to slot it home
Wolves 1 L’pool 2

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 14:19
Good ball in by Hugo headed out by Doc . Apparently 8 added minutes. Elliott shot is deflected and goes in off the post.
Wolves 1 L’pool 3

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 14:22
Craig Dawson down hurt after a whack from Nunez. Salah replaced by Gravenberch. Yellow cards for Elliott & Jones for jumping into the crowd celebrating.

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 14:30
More time added because of Dawson injury so we have now had 102!

Cheshire wolf
16/09/2023 14:37
All over and in the end perhaps the result we expected. An unexpectedly good start for Wolves but a failure to capitalise in a one goal lead led to the opportunity which L’pool took in the second half.
The changes Klopp made had a big impact and Wolves struggled to cope with their attack. Some well taken goals by reds, and a lucky deflection which will probably go down as an own goal to Bueno. Some good signs for a wolves with a fine debut from JRB, and Doyle coming on later & doing well. Cunha missed two golden opportunities and Fabio never got a shot on target after replacing him. Liverpool look likely to be challenging at the top by the end of the season, so no disgrace losing to them, as long as we beat the likes of Luton Town next week.
Wolves 1 Liverpool 3

Same old story don't score enough goals when we are on top.
Should of been 2 or 3 up at ht but it's the usuall story of missed chances.
Cunha should at least hit the target, god knows what he's trying to do there.
You knew klop would get into them ht and so it's proved and they totally outplayed us 2nd half, but we only have ourselves to blame we were way to deep and hardly got out of our half.
It's so frustrating but we just can't score enough goals to kill games.
Not convinced by oneil his subs certainly change games but in the oppositions favour!
Wrong subs for me think he should of brought sasha on instead of Silva for one and rained a few high balls in the box to him.
Will be surprised if oneil is still here at christmas, we can't score many goals and we have started to leak to many bad goals, it's not a good mix.

Really need to beat Luton away now.

Football is baffling, how can such a terrific effort in the first half be followed by such a drab non entity of an effort in the second? Okay, the Liverpool changes were made, but even so, what on earth happened.

We all know, goals change matches …. What a great start, Neto and Hwang puts it away but my god, we should have been 3 up at HT. How did Cunha miss that gilt edged chance? In the end Liverpool won by 2 goals, totally inexplicable except they have the ability to stick their opportunities away.

Frustration doesn’t come close,, that second half performance was as flat as a dab.

I'm just wondering how many weeks, months or years it will take for the penny to drop for people to realise Silva is a waste of a shirt. It's become a parody how he is being persisted with even as a sub..presumably people are blind or just daft. By all means bring him on, but after the game has finished ffs not before.

Regarding Luton, we were told pre season a 0-0 draw against them was " a sign of progress and encouraging" so with some prayer, luck and eye of the tiger spirit we may be able to defend for our lives and replicate it. Doubtful but possible.

Angry, if you’re good enough, you’re old enough. Enter Silva at 18. He couldn’t help his fee, but who who ever believed it was remotely sensible? Nevertheless he collected his signing on fee (as did Mendes, Gestafute and in turn Fosun) and wages, more than most of us will ever dream of . Moving onto the football, the lad has got me off my seat - that’s my honest assessment, he doesn’t excite me. To be honest, that second half was pretty poor, so the whole team and GON need to look at what on earth happened, however Silva seemed largely inept today, couldn’t hold the ball up, got brushed off easily, zero threat, bloody nothing!

My wish is that our Austrian Giraffe gets the nod up front next week at Kenilworth Road, more of a goal threat from what I’ve seen, could play off Cunha and maybe get his long neck onto a could of Neto crosses.

Still frustrated, we should be talking of a Wolves win today after the first 45 …… here we are, instead predictably talking about what might have been.

Agreed, he couldn't help his fee but what a reprehensible society it is where such a talentless footballer can not only command such an obscene fee, but become a millionaire with fees/wages etc. It's clear to anyone with a pair of eyes he is dreadful, yet for years on other forums we have had posters wittering on about him only "being a kid" and comparing him to other world class players using the argument these players had not achieved anything at " insert age of Fabio".

Obviously it isn't just him, but our fanbase can be unbelievable at times, years of this after the " cat 1 Morgan academy" BS we had for 5/6 years. Then I read Jones played " flamboyant football" and finishing 5th with the biggest budget in the league in 2003 was a better achievement than McCarthy winning the division 6 years later on a shoestring. The giraffe and to a lesser degree Hwang are the only goal threats , if the giraffe gets injured it's curtains and tbh with the mad recruitment we deserve it.

I saw this yesterday to Irish. Brighton are clearly just astonishing everyone on how well their club is run from the perspective of recruitment at selling if players and what a fabulous job Di Zerbi is doing

Even more impressive is their relatively low wage bill which is the 5th lowest in the prem. Wolves are the 4th lowest payers in wages

Not to mention the fact that Ferguson was signed from Bohemians for an undisclosed fee (probably in the region of 250k), and now is he is being touted at 100 million.

Clearly , Wolves fans may be blind to Silva’s deficiencies but other clubs can see them. Otherwise he would have been gone in our Summer Fire Sale (of which the Bhatti brothers would have been proud).
Meanwhile, the machines which doctors rig players up to, must all be screaming “He ain’t ready yet!” about Sasa. You would think he deserves at least 45 minutes?
