Match Thread: Wolves vs Liverpool FC - FA Cup 3rd Rd Replay

Max Stops Salah

By Wolves
January 17 2023

Wolves fans must put the disappointment of being wrongly denied a winning goal at Anfield behind them, and will their team on to a victory tonight, as the current cup holders come to Molineux for a replay of the 3rd round match.

Having recently lost out on a possible semi-final place in the Carabao Cup at Notts Forest, Wolves will surely be keen to proceed further in this year's FA Cup competition, and there may well be no better chance to beat Liverpool considering the injury list they have declared involving their first team squad. Coach Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he will need to field a below strength team this evening, although - naturally - still claiming that it will be good enough to win, which they will no doubt wish to achieve following their poor performance and result at Brighton at the weekend.

Wolves on the other hand will still be on a high after beating West Ham on Saturday, and will be looking forward to continuing their current good run of form under the leadership of coach Julen Lopetegui. No further injury doubts have been identified since the weekend, and Diego Costa has been declared fit after his recent injury lay-off. Mario Lamina will be ineligible for this game as he wasn't registered with the club before the first game at Anfield. It will also be way too soon for the expected new arrival Pablo Serablia who - as I type - is reportedly having a medical with Wolves with a view to being the latest recruit.

At his press conference JL gave little away as to whether he will once again play some of the youger payers like Lembikisa, Hodge and Toti who all did well at Anfield, however we can perhaps expect him to field a stong side with the intent of ensuring progress to the next round.

Tonight's game will kick off at Molineux at 19:45 hrs and will be refereed by the hugely experienced Andre Marriner. No word yet who will be on VAR duty but we can only hope it won't be Mike Dean!! Unusually the match will be screened on BBC1 and iPlayer

As the match will be screened on terrestrial TV there shouldn't be a need for the usual level of 'commentary' on this board, however updates will be posted, for those who may be unable to watch it live. Members are encouraged to post their own observations and join in the conversation

Thanks for the preview, as always.

Btw Ivy, why not put your excellent post-match reviews ATL when you go to a game? They would be a great addition to the content of the site.

I'm out and about tonight, so it's a really luxury to be able to record and then watch the game when I get home. So I won't be following it on here or elsewhere for a change. I'll drink enough to cope with the ecstasy or despair, and the FF button is always your friend.

I suspect Julen won't go for broke tonight by putting out his strongest team, but there will be a lot of quality on the bench.

UTW!

What a change to be able to watch the live broadcast.
Looking forward to it and some bevys cooling in the fridge.

Some probably expected changes tonight and perhaps on unexpected as it was reasonable to presume Sarkic may have kept goal tonight, but Jose Sa is kept in, and we have a strong bench.

A start for Lembiska, Hodge, Toti and Adama. Should be fun watching this without the league pressure. And on the Beeb too!

Happy with the line up, possibilities for positive change should it be required.

Will justice be done tonight? Sometimes that doesn’t happen in football, but we have to hope the good guys win tonight and eliminate those who should already be out of this competition. Looking forward this!!

PS Thanks for your comments Risca, appreciated. Being a bit of a numpty, as often I can be, what does ATL mean? Have a good night attempting to avoid the scores!!

Great strike by Elliott takes everyone by surprise and gives Jose no chance. Great goal

Collins has given it away a few times.

Elliot scores 0-1. Great finish but not much in the way of closing down.

I was just about to say even match but looking increasingly open as a match. Too open as far as we’re concerned

We are trying to play the ball across our defensive lines ……. As we do …… Liverpool are up for closing us down and causing us problems with that tactic …… and they are

Liverpool are not the team to keep playing out from the back against when they press so well. Free kick in a dangerous position but Gakpo goes offside

Terrible effort at playing it out from the back ends in a Liverpool corner. We are tying ourselves up in knots at the back. Dreadful

Cheshire wolf
17/01/2023 20:35
Half time after a very poor performance from Wolves and a deserved lead for Liverpool. We cause ourselves problems by continually trying to play out from the back even though L’pool press effectively. No threat from our front line at all, and Traore flatters to deceive. We don’t look like scoring whereas L’pool are likely to fill their boots.

0-1 HT.

Plenty on the bench to shake it up. It looks likely early changes will be made. Decent start but no doubt about it, that’s an extremely disappointing first half overall.

Uncharacteristically poor display throughout the first half and the old habit of backwards and sideways play was quickly readopted.
Changes made so hopefully a better second half.

Hand ball and free kick to Wolves to give one more chance 25 yds out Ruben lobs it in but head tennis leads to nothing. Final whistle blows and we exit the FA Cup as well.
A stunning goal from Elliot beat us in a dreadfully poor first half showing. Only in the last 15 minutes did we show any real threat to the L’pool goal, when we had 3 strikers on. Considering their recent form Liverpool played well and controlled the game whilst we never really looked like scoring.

We now have Man City away and Liverpool again at home which is worrying!!

Still lots for JL to work on in order to make sure we survive in the Prem.

And as an afterthought- all the talk about Adama Traore, whether he will sign or leave, he saw plenty of the ball tonight and produced very very little with it. I don’t think he found a Wolves player with any crosses into the box and his only shot was wide. We should probably get whatever we can for him and look for a decent replacement.

Andy Fincher
17/01/2023 21:50
Sadly the best team won without being in that much trouble.
A great shot for their goal but he's ran half the length of the pitch without a challenge.
I'm not in favour of just humping the ball about but sometimes, clear it. We pi55 about at the back so much and so many times get in trouble.
I think the only effort on target was that weak header from Cunha that I could have saved.
These new players that are arriving shouldn't have too much trouble getting a game.
Very disappointing.

How did the donkey Jimenez get on? Even with De bruyne providing the service, he would struggle to be on the end of anything.

Ivybridge Wolf

I think Adama got one cross on Jimenez’s head Chesh, nevertheless he was underwhelming tonight. Is he out of contract this summer? Rumours are Lopetegui is preparing to offer a new contract.

In fairness was their any player who earned their wages tonight? Not really. It was an all round poor performance from back to front. No energy or passion, it just didn’t feel like they thought it was a cup tie for long periods of the match. No urgency. Very disappointed again for the second match on the trot with Nunes, but again, who played well. Neves perhaps.

Don’t forget, this is a Liverpool side who couldn’t buy a win.

Some will say it leaves clear to focus on the league, for me it’s another season without any chance of winning anything. Yep, I’m p!ssed off.

That was an awful watch, easily the worst performance since Jlo arrived.
We only showed a bit of fight and passion in injury time, way to late.
Liverpool were low on confidence and in my opinion were there for the taking but we never laid a glove on them, I bet klopp couldn't believe his luck.
Felt sorry for all the freezing wolves fans who paid good money to watch that complete garbage.
Had a feeling we would go out tonight after being robbed first game.
Oh well time to concentrate on the league then, just man city away next that should be easy if we play like we did tonight.🙈

Personally I thought Raul did OK in the game, and once again suffered from poor service. He did get on the end of just one Adama cross which was well defended by Gomez (my mistake in my Adama observation). I think he looks far more dangerous and productive than Costa has in any of his games, and it was such a shame that he was judged to be offside - when it could only have been his arm which was - against West Ham, as he was in the right place to collect the ball and finished it with aplomb.

Costa looks shot as a player, in his day he was top class but father time catches up with us all I'm afraid. 15 years ago we were a thriving bustling board...now it feels like God's waiting room and I include myself in this. ☠

Regarding exiting the cups, I don't share any view from those saying the league is more important. We were on national tv playing in front of millions and by all accounts played abysmally with any tiny hope of silverware/ european football gone. The only goal this season now is to avoid relegation. Obviously staying in the prem is important, but not at the expense of everything else. If the goal of every season is simply to remain in a league without trying to win something, it ceases being a sport and becomes a money making exercise. Leaving wolves aside, fans of the " big" clubs don't seem to care about winning anything as they long as they finish top4 ..they have bought into the capitalist mindset that has infiltrated the game prioritising money above everything else. The most ridiculous thing about it is, none of these fans will see this generated money and neither will the club with much of it pocketed by already wealthy owners/ directors.

Risca TM

In fairness, I think the club under Julen wanted to compete for the cups at the same level as they want to avoid relegation.

Also I don't think Costa looks shot as a player. Granted time is not on his side, but I thought he did well when coming yesterday. His set-up in the box for Cunha was class, but the lad punted it onto the ring road from about 10 yards out!

An angry wolf
18/01/2023 19:48
He is shot compared to past days..all relative. I don't have any issues with the club's approach to the cups, but more fans of all clubs who seem to minimise the importance of actually winning things compared to the usual top 4 narrative. I'd still take Costa upfront to the alternatives we have
