Wolves travel the short distance to the East Midlands to face Nottingham Forest, in an effort to reach their first competition semi final since 2019.
After two home wins in the Carabao Cup, Wolves must travel and face Premiership opposition at the City Ground tonight, in the knowledge that a semi final place is likely to involve facing Man Utd, Man City or Newcastle Utd. However tonight's game will be the first League Cup quarter-final for Wolves since Mark McGees's team (featuring Steve Bull and Don Goodman as a front two) were beaten 1 - 0 at Villa Park in the 1995-96 season. And no Wolves fan will forget that it was Notts Forest who they defeated in their most recent Cup win of any sort at Wembley in 1980 when Andy Gray scored the only goal of the game.
Following the dreadful denial of a winning Wolves goal in the other Cup competion at the weekend Julen Lopetegui must motivate his squad for another interesting challenge, which most fans will believe can be won by his newly energised squad. Similarly Forest Manager Steve Cooper will need to pick his team up after they suffered a somewhat humiliating 4 -1 defeat at Blackpool at the weekend.
Wolves have some added injury worries on top of the long standing four absentees, as Daniel Podence, Diego Costa and now Rayan Ait-Nouri have joined the injured list. Hwang Hee Chan came on and did well at Liverpool and Dexter Lembikisa had a good evening in his first League start, whilst Raul Jimenez had a mixed evening. So it will be interesting to see the starting Xl that Lopetegui decides upon for this match. Forest also reportedly have several injured players, including Morgan Gibbs-White who has made quite a name for himself there since his expensive move from Wolves.
Tonight's game will kick off at 19:45hrs and will be refereed by the experienced Graham Scott. The match will not be screened by any channels as Man City are playing!! Should the score be level after 90 minutes there will be no extra time and the game will be settled with penalties.

JL is really showing his faith in his squad by making six changes for tonight's game, with Joao taking over from Ruben as captain, and Max and Toti forming the central defence pairing. Ait-Nouri is fit after all and will presumably retain his attacking role with Jonny at left back. Raul gets another chance leading the attack. Line-up:
Bloody hell, Julen really is underlining each match is a squad effort, not a first team effort. The bench seems as important as the 11 sent onto the park.
Even if it goes t*ts up tonight, I like the change in motivation and approach.

Sorry for late start gents but only just got a picture myself. Seems a fairly frantic start but all even so far. As expected RAN is attacking up the left wing. Johnson hits the ball at Max who is next to him - it hits his arm which is down by his side but Johnson still screams for a penalty!! Not given

Jonny seems to be playing at right centre back with Max at left back and Toti at left centre back. Big Willy Boly is in the defence for Forest
Good confident attacking by Wolves leads to Semedo Berta corner, but play now down the other end &a corner for Forest. Ref telling the captains about issues in the area. Corner flicked on to the bar and Willy B is the first to it to convert, but no celebration

I doubt many on here would disagree with you Angry, but Bruno in his wisdom wouldn’t play him and so he wanted out.
In fairness Forest look dangerous when they break. Brennan Johnson looks to have a problem, but probably OK
I just googled worrals height ( forest captain) after seeing him a clear head bigger than most of our players expecting to see 6ft5 plus but he is only 6ft2 . We must have the smallest squad in the league by some way. It's no surprise the likes of Adama have such a poor assist record with a collection of dwarfs to aim for.
Nunes need to sharpen up some of his passes, too many going astray.

Anyway, along the same retro line, see the programme of the 1980 final.
We seem a long way from repeating that feat from 1980 at the moment. Listening to Mikey Burrows and Thommo and the commentary is far from complimentary about our current efforts on the pitch. Strongly suggestive that changes from the bench will be needed.

Great save from Wolves with Hwang and Jimenez but Jimenez failed to score, good save and Guedes well over / wide.

I think that’s why Kaladjic was brought in but look what happened there!
Guedes brings a save out of Henderson - at last. Raul breaks and his shot is well saved then Hwang wastes the follow up
Good pictures and unbroken stream so far on vipbox. Dreadful stuff with the keeper for forest a spectator bar Jimenez missing a sitter but only to be expected.

Max tugs Johnson’s shirt to stop him & gets the obligatory yellow card. Poor effort by Hwang straight at Henderson after a fine cross by Raul. We need to take these chances!

Sadly I was referring to the 1967 programme at the head of Ches’ article 😢. 12 when we beat Forest.

Half time whistle goes and we trail to a Willy Boly goal!! A disappointing showing from Wolves so far with too many slack passes giving away possession. Toti & Kilman have looked comfortable in defence and Joao & Nunes have done OK in midfield, whilst RAN has probably had more possession than any other Wolves player, but Semedo on the other side has been largely unproductive. Raul & Hwang have both had great chances to score but brought out saves fro m Henderson. Lopetegui not very impressed!

I'm on a laptop, it might be different on a mobile as I tried it on my smartphone and it isnt working but watched the full first half on my laptop with no issues ( so far)Maybe Andy's site works.
The Wolves app is doing my head in too. Keeps dropping out so it’s 5Live Extra for me now.

Excellent play by MGW but it still doesn’t go in, then an Aurier shot blocked.
Willy Boly hurt trying to tackle Hwang and it doesn’t look good for him sadly. Daniel Podence and Matheus Cunha being prepared to come on for RAN & Joao.

Raul links up well with Pod but loses the return ball. But he doesn’t miss the chance set up by Cunha after good build up play from Nunes.

I was just thinking how Ruben has avoided a yellow card for a while then he gets one for leaving a bit on Aurier which was of course exaggerated by the Forest man. Adama replaces Raul

Massive calls from Wolves players for a penalty. Not given and I didn’t see it.
Clinton Morrison concludes the penalty should have been given …… but it is Clinton Morrison
Clear foul and a penalty which didnt go to VAR. A player losing a boot isnt deemed to be a foul according to the ref
Nunes looks for a pen but nothing given even though his boot has come off. Yellow card for Nunes Pod & Aurier who were squaring up.Dennis trod on Nunes’s boot as he was in the area. JL gets a yellow card for the second game!!
To clarify, the forest player made so much contact the boot came off from the wolves player.

Bit annoyed that when the ball gets to Adama, the Wolves players stop running and wait for Adama to take people on rather than run into space etc.

A good effort by Wolves and a huge disappointment in the end when young Hodge’s pen was well saved. We should have had a penalty for a foul on Nunez and I cannot offer any explanation why it wasn’t given. I feel our team will continue to improve under JL - they did almost all the attacking in the second half but still struggled to score, but looked good when Raul & Cunha were upfront.

I dont agree with Cheshire, I thought it was a poor disjointed performance against a team that will probably be in the championship next season. Raul scored ( he could hardly miss) but his miss along with Hwangs cost us a place in the semis
Ah feck it. At least we can concentrate on avoiding relegation.
Still feels the team keeps falling short in believing in themselves. We need a big performance and a big win to break out of this pattern of failing to win matches because we can't score goals to get over the line.
I'm really not being cynical, but when Hodge was given that critical penalty I feared the worst. He seems like the least likely penalty taker in the whole team, including Sa.

Hopefully forest wont get Southampton in the semis. We wouldnt beat newcastle or united over 2 legs anyway.
