Match Thread: Wolves vs Arsenal

Joao's Winner Last Year

By Wolves
February 10 2022

Wolves welcome Arsenal to Molineux tonight for the rearranged game after the December fixture was postponed due to Covid infections.

Fans will be aware that three points tonight can lift Wolves above both Arsenal and Spurs into 6th place!! At least the stadium is likely to be full this evening, rather than the empty atmosphere within which Wolves overcame Arsenal 2 -1 last seaon, following a Raul Jimenez penalty and the sending off of David Luiz, and a thunderbolt from Joao Moutinho. This of course was followed by the dismissal of keeper Bernt Leno who inexplicably chose to handle outside his area!

Federico Trincao has completed his Covid isolation and returned to training so should be available for selection tonight. Hee Chan Hwang has also returned to training but it may be a little early for him to start a game. We still await the return to fitness of Pedro Neto, Willy Boly and Jonny though. The interesting choice for Bruno Lage this evening will be whether to return Romain Saiss to his usual starting postion or to retain his understudy Tito Gomes who has made a good impression over the past 3 games.

The home FA Cup defeat against Norwich last weekend will hopefully provoke a good reaction from the team this evening.

The game will kick off at 7:45pm and will be screened live on BT Sport 2HD. It will be refereed by perhaps the top official Michael Oliver with Lee Mason on VAR duty.

This board will endeavour to provide regular updates on the progress of the game. Members are encouraged to post their observations and join in the conversation.

Would be great to take all three points tonight but it will be a tough game. Expecting Saiss to be called upon instead of Tito if only for his greater experience at this level even though the youngster has done so well. Time for Raul to get onto the scoresheet again, his fitness must surely have returned by now. Podence and Trincao need to provide some supply and not just try to dribble through the defence, and let’s get some bodies into the box for a change.
2-1 to Wolves.

Surprising to see Ait-Nouri on the bench replaced by Marcal, but really pleasing to see Jonny back on the bench with Hwang. Trincao and Saiss are restored to the side with Fabio & Toti on the bench. Line-up:

Srill to work out my mandatory bet this evening ….. never against us, I might add (well almost never). Donk retained, no Moutinho.

Agree LPH, a great deal on the creative shoulders of Trinc and Podence. Also agree with you Ches about the absence of RAN.

Tight win for us? Hope so. UTW!!

PS - Chesh, I believe this is fixture is as timetabled, the postponed match was due to be played at Arsenal.

I hadn’t noticed Joao Moutinho was missing from the squad & Donk starts in his place. Bruno says “he felt something in training y’day”

Manager of Month curse killed us off Saturday so we should be Good tonight🤔!
Seriously, great to see Jonny on bench and perhaps he may get a few minutes. Wonder what is going through Raul’s mind as he faces Arsenal again. Although he has not quite regained his previous sharpness yet he has really looked energetic; Gunners would be a special one for him?

I think this is a really hard game to forecast

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 19:49
Martinelli gets the first corner off Max. Cleared eventually.

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 19:53
Super ball into their box for Donk but Partey gets to it first

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 19:59
Good period of attacking passes by Wolves but Neves pass is just to fast fro Trink. DP brought down by White outside their area but no yellow card shown by Michael Oliver. Free kick comes to nothing

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 20:02
Trink puts a cross over for Raul but too close to Ramsdale but that’s the service Raul needs

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 20:08
Lacazette falls over when Saiss gets near him and wins a very soft free kick. White’s shot is blocked then Raul is fouled as he breaks. He then tries to beat Ramsdale from the half way line!!

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 20:11
Daniel Podence is very active this evening launching some good attacks. Gabriel puts the ball in from a scruffy corner. VAR check after Sa. Appeared to be fouled but goal stands

Ugly goal from an Arsenal corner.
0-1

Wolves get a corner after good play between Trink & Raul poor pass by Marcalgives away possession though.

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 20:19
Cynical foul by Partey on Trink earns him the 1st yellow card. Great attacking play by Wolves from both sides of the pitch but missing those in the box

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 20:23
Tackle from behind on Odergaard earns Saiss a yellow card. Nelson puts a ball on Raul’s head but he can’t beat Ramsdale. L’pool 1 Leicester 0

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 20:25
Marcal down hurt on the line. OK to cipontinue

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 20:27
Excellent shot by Nelson Semedo just wide after good work by DP & Raul

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 20:29
Great play gtvSaka to set up Lacazette but he shoot’s straight at Jose.

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 20:36
Another cynical foul on DPbut no yellow card then Xhaka pulls back Raul and does get one. Free kick for RN to take, goes for near side but wid playing 3 added minutes. Soares brings down DP but still no punishment
Half time whistle goes and we must hope things will improve for us in the second half again. We have shown some very good attacking play but still find it difficult getting into the 6 yd box and posing a real threat. Arsenal’s goal was fortunate and unusually for us from a corner.
Wolves 0 Arsenal 1

chicagowolf
10/02/2022 20:39
Half time and Arsenal have been a shade sharper for their 1-0 lead.
Neves has sprayed it about, Podence energetic, but we have lacked it upfront once more.
Let’s see what 2nd half holds. Bruno has been wild on the touchline.

Lupy
10/02/2022 20:40
All is not lost, fortunate goal for Arsenal but we are presenting an attacking threat so if we continue we can easily get something out of this. Trincao and Podence both looking lively and if RAN comes on we can tie the Arsenal defenders in knots. Just need that one good break to put us back in the mix. Neves is running the show.

chicagowolf
10/02/2022 20:41
BTW Arsenal will be lucky to avoid a red card at this rate 🧐

chicagowolf
10/02/2022 20:44
Oh, and Diego Jota just put Liverpool in the lead at Anfield

Ivybridge Wolf
10/02/2022 20:46
A defensive error for the goal for sure, but our issues also largely lie up front. Just not gelling. A couple of great crosses from MArcal and Semedo and a few (or so) poor ones from Podence and Trinc.

Podence getting some treatment from the Arsenal defence.

Overall, I’d say Arsenal are the better team so far.

We need to up the ideas up front.

No halftime changes. Donk puts a cross over from the left but too close to Ramsdale. Lacazette falls over again but in the box & told to get up!

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 20:58
Trink playing well down right. DP puts a good cross in from corner but Donk heads wide. All Wolves at the moment

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 21:04
Corner to A’nal off Nelson. Comes to nothing. DP breaks and Raul just can’t get any force in his header. Neves gets a yellow card for a foul on Lacazette but they wanted a red!!

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 21:05
Gabriel gets a yellow for time wasting _ already! RAN & Chiq being prepared to come on

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 21:06
Chiq on for Trink, and RAN. On for Marcal

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 21:09
Come on Wolves put these cheating tw4ts to the sword!!

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 21:13
Another soft free kick after little contact on Tierney. Smith-Rowe replaces Odergaard. Another cynical foul by Martinelli gets him a yellow after fouling DP and is shown a 2nd yellow and is sent off!!

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 21:14
Raul converts RAN’s free kick but offside clearly.

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 21:16
Lacazette only has Sa to beat but shoots wide

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 21:17
Holding shores up the defence replacing Saka. Ramsdale makes two great saves the second keeps a blast from Saiss out

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 21:20
A good line “There is no team better rehearsed at playing a man down than Arsenal”!!

Ivybridge Wolf
10/02/2022 21:21
Definite red card.

Have we got the know how ? Will it be the Ramsdale show?

C’mon Wolves, 13 to go

Ridiculous putting a cross in for Raul when he is surrounded by 4 defenders. Lacazette replaced by Nketiah. CC replaced by Fabio - he took a bloody nose first half

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 21:28
Exciting play & everything but a goal! Donk heads over again

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 21:33
Free kick for RAN. To take on left side, but ref spots a push in the area. Arsenal time wasting again. Jota has scored his set goal for L’pool. We could do with him!! Five added minutes to play

Fabio should have shot but passes it to the defence. Gabriel is ‘poleaxed’ by DP!! Nothing given some gets up!!

Cheshire wolf
10/02/2022 21:41
Raultries an acrobatic shot but too high. Final attack by Wolves leads to a corner but cleared. All over. I’m sick of 1- 0 defeats - Leicester, Spurs, Man Utd, L’pool, Man City, Norwich. We just cannot score against these teams! So much for 6th place.

0-1 FT after the sending off we were all over them but could not turn the advantage our way.

Lupy
10/02/2022 21:52
Well we huffed and we puffed but we still couldn’t score. Is something wrong with our approach or are we just currently unlucky? All over them for 45 minutes and really didn’t have a straight forward shot on goal, we seem to be unable to find enough space to fashion clear cut chances. Frustrating. Infuriating, disappointing.

So frustrating. What a chance to make inroads at the top after last nights results. The same for Arsenal but they've taken the chance.
A bad goal to concede but with our lack of goalscoring we will nearly always be in trouble if we can't keep a clean sheet.
A win on Sunday has now become a must.
Right now I am frustrated and fed up and need to look at this again with a clear head.

Thats the season as good as over, ok you can argue we can still get 6th! However im not sure we will ever get a better chance at top 4 than we had this season. Massive opportunity lost! However its not surprising given the fact that we are still averaging less than a goal a game .... and we dont have a natural goalscorer..... and its now almost a given that we dont perform in the first 45 mins of any game.
I know we have played some good stuff over the course of the season so far.. but the second half of the season will now just fizzle out into mid table mediocrity. The FA Cup could have given us some excitement.
2 games in a week, both at home.. both huge.. and we cant even find the net once! This isnt bad luck folks... its a long established trend. Wake me up at the start of next season.....

thoroughly disappointing evening. 11v11 whilst there wasn’t much in it I felt Arsenal edged it.

11v10 we could not make the extra man tell. Plenty of possession and pressure, not enough meaningful moments.

Not enough composure or quality in the key areas up front, whether crossing, taking players on, making the right decisions, shooting or anything relating to sticking in the back of the net.

The lack of goals is ultimately going to hurt us badly and whilst tonight, Arsenals goal was partially due to a rare moment of poor defending, if Ramsdale hasn’t been given enough to do or think about (we were at home after all) then the key reason is that our attackers aren’t doing enough ….. collectively.

Spurs on Sunday. Can we score a goal? Answers on a postcard.

As always, UTW!!

Looks like the bubbles burst, oh well it was great while it lasted. Bruno didn't get the backing in January and our short comings were there to see tonight. I'm afraid trincao doesn't convince me at all. There's talk of a straight swop with him and adama the end of the season, I hope not that doesn't seem a good deal to me, he just seems to lightweight. Maybe we deserved something from the game tonight but how many times have we said that this season. Lose at spuds Sunday and that's the euro dream gone to. That bloody manager of the month curse strikes again!

Just noticed that after Spurs and Leicester, we play Arsenal again at their place on Thursday 24th February, on Amazon.

A possibility for redemption?

Well, a possibility, certainly!

Tough couple of weeks coming up.

Cheers for the good but disappointing readback. I had a feeling the bubble would burst after the transfer window and winter break disturbances. Big challenge for Bruno to stop the season petering out.
