Match Thread: Wolves vs Manchester City

Striking talent

By Wolves
September 21 2020

After perhaps an unexpectedly busy weekend for most Wolves fans the team face a real challenge at Molineux this evening, when they host former PL Champions Manchester City, for City's first game of the season.

Wolves will be hoping to continue their exciting start to the Premiership season following their win at Bramhall Lane last week, although realistically a repeat of last season's double over City may be a lot to ask for!!

Following the £40m sale of Diogo Jota to Liverpool and Matt Doherty's transfer to Spurs, Wolves fans will be keen to see how the squad shapes up for this evening's game, and how many of the new signings make a start, especially considering the poor performance against Stoke midweek. New sigining Ki-Jana Hoever will not be eligible to involved in tonight's game however.

For their part City will be without stars Sergio Aguero and Eymerick Laporte, so Nathan Ake may well make his debut with Gabriel Jesus leading the attack.

Tonight's game will be screened by Sky TV and will kick off at 20:15 hrs. Our referee will be the very experienced André Marriner.

This board will endeavour to carry regular updates, and members are encouraged to post their own observations for the benefit of those unable to watch the game.

Moutinho and Neves line-up together for tonight's game - otherwise it is the same starting Xl as for last Monday's game. Line-up:

none of the new boys start, and a tough game. But let's give it a go. Time for a Neves bullet

Sterling goes down in our area but the ref aware CC never touched him. City have made a good start

Cheshire wolf
21/09/2020 20:22
Marcel seems to be hurt already & Vinagre stripped ready to replace him

chicagowolf
21/09/2020 20:24
Marcal off for Vinaigre after just seven mins

Cheshire wolf
21/09/2020 20:26
Vinagre on - difficult to see what Marcal’s problem was. DeBruyne free kick well dealt with by Rui

chicagowolf
21/09/2020 20:28
Nice save from a De Bryuner freekick. MC pushing hard

Cheshire wolf
21/09/2020 20:32
Good period of play by Wolves until CC misplays the ball

Cheshire wolf
21/09/2020 20:35
Saiss brings down DeBruyne on the edge of the area & he scores the penalty easily lashing it past Rui. An unnecessary challenge by Saiss

After the penalty we look a bit rattled. Need to weather the storm to keep them out and get our balance

Cheshire wolf
21/09/2020 20:40
City are playing well - their passing is crisp and accurate & Wolves are struggling to get and retain any possession

21/09/2020 20:41
Getting a bit embarrassing , Saiss has probably cost us the match.. the left side vinagre/saiss needs upgrading

Ivybridge Wolf

City started well, Sterling cheats and gets nothing, City dominant, we get back on terms to a degree and sad to say one of the worst defensive tackles by a Wolves player for a long time by Saiss. It’s only one goal but feels like a mountain at the moment

Excellent passing play by a City ends with Foden converting for their second
Wolves 0 City 2 - just like last season, but then they only had 10 men!!!

0-2. Wolves not good anywhere. Keep losing the ball

Ivybridge Wolf
21/09/2020 20:49
They are all over us. 0-2. Well worked goal.

When you think how we thwarted this lot last year, dear oh dear. Can’t get the ball, gulf in class at the moment.

Jesus himself couldnt win this for wolves - I know its city but this is probably the worst performance so far Ive seen in years. We look like a league 2 club desperately hanging on to a premier league club in the cup.. its pathetic

Cheshire wolf
21/09/2020 20:57
Raul earns our first corner which is eventually swung in by Adama on to Raul’s head but goes over

Ivybridge Wolf
21/09/2020 20:59
Great save by Patricio to save a thoroughly embarrassing score line. But on tonight’s evidence thus far, there’s still time for that.

Men against boys. Tough to watch

Good save from Rui to deny DeBruyne

Outplayed so far.

Genuinely difficult to see how any half time team talk or substitution could change things. We live in hope! UTW

Unless we get some halftime inspiration from the boss our only chance seems to be to get Jesus sent off!!

Cheshire wolf
21/09/2020 21:17
Half time and City deservedly lead by two goals. A very disappointing and unnecessary challenge By Saiss to concede a penalty which DeBruyne despatched coolly. The second scored by Foden after good passing play. Wolves pretty impotent so far. My abiding impression continues to that Adama is NOT a wing back, an£ the sooner we lans Semedo the better!!!
Wolves 0 City 2

Cheshire wolf
21/09/2020 21:23
Good run down right wing by Adama but crosses straight to Ederson

Cheshire wolf
21/09/2020 21:25
Adama loses ball & before you know it DeBruyne has set up Jesus who’s shot is well taken by Rui

Cheshire wolf
21/09/2020 21:27
First shot in anger by Wolves & DP goes really close spinning & shooting just wide

Cheshire wolf
21/09/2020 21:29
Chance falls to Neves but it’s on his left foot & he hasn’t got one!! Don’t know why DP chose not to shoot

Cheshire wolf
21/09/2020 21:32
Brilliant ball by Joao to free DP who beats Ederson but over the bar

Cheshire wolf
21/09/2020 21:33
Now Raul screws a great pass from Adama wide. So many chances but nothing to show for them

Cheshire wolf
21/09/2020 21:34
Great ball by Raul to free DP unlucky first touch

Ivybridge Wolf
21/09/2020 21:35
How many chances are we going to miss! Jimenez now after Podence who was 1 on 1.

Great to see this much better second half effort which is a miracle in itself but if we can’t hit the net in this positive period it’ll be all for nothing.

Podence again muffs his control to put himself in

COYW!

Wolves have at least settled down now & largely stopped the flood, and are managing to put some good attacking play together, however we should have scored at least once

Cheshire wolf
21/09/2020 21:43
Jesus puts the ball in the net but clearly offside

Cheshire wolf
21/09/2020 21:46
Fabio & Donk being prepared to join the fray

Cheshire wolf
21/09/2020 21:50
Ball goes out of play so... Donk on for Joao & Fabio Silva on for Neto

Cheshire wolf
21/09/2020 21:51
DP nutmegs DeBruyne and puts the ball on Raul’s head - enough said!!
Wolves 1 City 2

Billericay Wolf

1-2 Raul. Come on.

Ivybridge Wolf
21/09/2020 21:52
Get in!

Well played Podence, beauty of a Meg on De Bruyne, fabulous chip and great Jimenez header.

Sterling replaced by City new boy Ferran Torres, & Sterling doesn’t look happy!!

chicagowolf
21/09/2020 21:56
Podence down with what looks like a head injury. Dendonker and wunderkid on.
1-2. Here we go for the last ten mins

Cheshire wolf
21/09/2020 21:57
Vinagre tries usurping his customary step-overs to get round Kyle Walker - no chance!

Cheshire wolf
21/09/2020 21:59
Five minutes plus AT to play. Rhodri shown a yellow card for a foul on Raul. Willy Bolyheads the free kick high & wide

Cheshire wolf
21/09/2020 22:03
Can’t argue with the choice of DeBruyne as MotM he really is a special player in my view. 4 added minutes to play

Cheshire wolf
21/09/2020 22:12
Rui denies Jesus again, City wasting as much time as possible.
Jesus squeezes the ball past Rui this time to seal three points
Wolves 1 MannCity 3
And that’s the final score. City were too good for us this time. Despite a spirited fightback in the second half, when Raul scored a great header but we couldn’t keep them out in the end. A disappointing result for us, but our first team probably were not playing tonight, & will be playing when the transfer window closes. Shame Marcel had to go off as I think he would have shored things up a bit at the back.
On to West Ham next Sunday

an angry wolf
21/09/2020 22:12
Neither Vinagre or Saiss are good enough in my opinion.. hopefully both are upgraded next transfer window. I would also say that Moutinho is starting to look like father time has caught up with him

an angry wolf
21/09/2020 22:18
and for love of God, play Traore upfront... he's probably our most dangerous player and wasted at right back which will hopefully be resolved if we sign semedo

Billericay Wolf
21/09/2020 22:19
1-3 So many missed chances.

Ivybridge Wolf
21/09/2020 22:24
So bloody frustrating.

Truly awful in the first half, just dreadful followed by a spirited and much better second half ..... but we have to take chances when they come our way ...... and we didn’t which was hugely frustrating and disappointing. We scored a good goal but too little too late ultimately.

When we are second best, as in the first half, we can’t afford to gift penalties and being 2 goals behind .... well, our chances were well and truly diminished.

At least we showed some effort because it was embarrassing after 45.

Decent 2nd half but damage was already done. Should have had a goal before the one we actually did get. Hopefully I'm wrong but sadly it does sometimes look as though time is catching up with Joao and I hope we never see Traore play wing-back again, he was useless there last week and spends more time on his @#$%& than Grealish. Still, with Hoever and, fingers crossed, Semedo we can get him farther forward,

chicagowolf
21/09/2020 22:26
Neves and Moutinho have been our solid midfield rock and inspiration. Neither was on the boil and Traore is terrrible going backward.
Nice night to forget 😟

I hope Marcal's injury isn't too bad. All being well, Samedo signs in the morning.
