Match Thread: Burnley FC vs Wolves

Two In Form Strikers

By Wolves
July 15 2020

Despite all the claims to the contrary, Wolves will surely be looking at tonight's game as an opportunity to cement their position in the Top Six, in the search for Eurpean Football again next season.

Coach Nuno Espirito Santo is in no doubt about the toughness of the task facing them tonight in their visit to Burnley, knowing that all games against Sean Dyche's teams have been very difficult affairs. Wolves lost at Turf Moor towards the end of last season and could only manage a 1 - 1 draw at Molineux early this season. Burnley have recently revitalised their season with some good results, are in tenth position in the table (five points below Wolves) and have put themselves back in the hunt for European Football next season. Jay Rodriguez has had a very good season for them scoring vital goals, and will no doubt pose the same level of danger to Wolves as we hope our in-form striker Raul Jiminez will to Burnley.

After a very good performance and result against a strangely poor Everton, which featured a very promising debut for new-boy Daniel Podence, it will be very interesting to see the starting line-up chosen by Nuno tonight. He has said in his pre-match press conference that there are "a couple of injury issues to be assessed first", possibly involving Pedro Neto and Jonny Otto who both struggled at times on Sunday.

Our referee for tonight's game will be the enigmatic Mike Dean, whose last red card was shown at Molineux when he sent Leicester's Hamza Choudhury off!

Unusually the game will be broadcast live by BBC's Match Of The Day. Please note the first half will be on BBC2, before switching to BBC1. Kick off will be at 6pm

As most members on here are likely to be able to freely access the game a commentary will not be considered necessary, but members are encouraged to post their observations and comments.

As suspected Pedro Neto & Jonny Otto don't make the starting line-up, and Matt Doherty also drops to the bench after a couple of below par performances. Line-up:

Several changes made and with Traore and Vinagre playing as wingbacks the Burnley defenders may be in for a torrid 90 minutes.
Podence starts again with Jota and Raul.

Nuno is intent on attack Tonight it seems, however Adama will have to get back for his defensive duties!! Nevertheless the best from of defence is attack ay it? Glad to see Podence get another start, Neto and Donk must be slightly miffed not to be in the starting line up (is Neto fully fit for a start?) but I’m sure both wont be far from Nuno’s thoughts as the match progresses.

Hope you managed to see the Conor Coady interview on BBC. He went through the whole team, commenting on their qualities and a bit of humour And a great deal on enthusiasm. Easy to see why he’s our captain. Fantastic interview

For me, he is now a ‘Wolves man’ in every sense. I can’t give any better praise.

Wind is with us this half. Amazing clearance from Burnley which was thumped upfield and floated in the air back into their half!

Decent Wolves start, plenty of Traore on the ball

Wolves on top so far. Raul brought a save from Pope after an Adama cross, then Joao’s corner went over the bar from Saiss’s shoulder. Podence, Traore & Vinagre are testing B’ley down both wings

We are attacking very well indeed. A bit more luck and we could easily be winning. Some great crosses and corners, creating a bit of mayhem but no goals yet.

Drinks break, will be followed by a Burnley corner ...... strange

The wind is quite strong and influencing play at times eg: Joao’s corner being carried out of play. Delightfully lofted ball by Podence into Jota but he can’t swivel and get an accurate shot away

When was the last time we scored from a corner.. surely a corner on the right suits a left footed player swinging it in instead of Moutinho ... another HT 0-0 isnt a surprise to anyone

Cheshire wolf
15/07/2020 18:52
Good defending by CC & Vinagre to deny Rodriguez. Great ball into their are by Neves gets us another corner but cleared easily then half time whistle sounds.
Good play by Wolves so far stretching Burnley well and generally coping with their two strikers at the other end. Our strike force are swapping sides and moving and Vinagre is joining in well. Hope our second half legend will ring true!

I found that an enjoyable half of football. Intriguing match. We still aren’t hitting the heights in terms of final third, though some of the crosses and corners, particularly in the first 20 odd minutes were excellent And as I mentioned with a bit more luck we could have scored. But you make your luck and we drifted away a little after the (bloody) drinks break. Some of our decision making with the final pass or taking the ball on too far was in evidence again - Podence and Jota guilty, however on what we’ve seen, we were the better side. The Podence dink into Jota was great and Jota a touch unlucky.

Hopeful for the second half but we’ll need to control stuff a little with that wind in our faces.

I think it may be ‘if ever’ .... live League matches started in the 80s and we were nowhere to be seen in them days!

Burnley have come out and are applying pressure in spite of Rodriguez being subbed. Jimenez then spooned a chance and Saiss is on the floor receiving treatment. That’s the second half summed up so far. 9 minutes gone

The BBC are cocking up camera work here on several occasions, missing play with replays or just not showing it.

We have certainly not started this half particularly well

Powder puff attack , always passing backwards for some reason. 3 goals against Everton ( 2 set pieces ) doesnt change that... why we keep passing it 50 yards across the pitch when on the edge of the penalty area I've no idea. Hopefully we will nick a late goal but we will never be a "top " side playing like this with pretty play in midfield but no teeth upfront

Well burger me. Penalty, handball from Doc. Chris Woods doesn’t make a mistake 1-1.

Debate on the penalty decision as Doc was trying to defend himself from an overhead kick from Burnley.

Gutted, 4 points lost from last minute goals in recent matches

Not a bad performance but a disappointing result bearing in mind we dominated the game. We had enough control of the match to score at least one goal and lack of attacking prowess cost us today, but as usual VAR ruined the game with the ridiculous handball rules we have in football today.

We don't have enough upfront to be in the champions league unfortunately.

Ivybridge Wolf
15/07/2020 20:14
Frankly, that was an incredibly harsh penalty decision. I’m still trying to understand what is going on with handball these days and in no way did Doc in anyway go in to deliberate touch the ball with his arm, nor was it an unnatural placement of the arm. To be honest, were you Doc, you’d be hard pressed not to expect a full face of boot if Doc did not do what he did to potentially defend himself from the overhead kick, so he can’t be blamed. Additionally if Dean hadn’t have given it, I’m not certain VAR would have overruled him in that situation ...... or would it?? Who ffing knows these days.

So frustrated, I believe we did enough to win ..... a single goal is never enough though.

It's easy to criticise the officials but they only interpret the laws handed down from powers above and enforce them. Even leaving aside this game, I've been fiercely opposed to penalties handed out for innocuous incidents and a player putting his arm up to protect himself against what amounts to dangerous play should not be a game defining moment. Common sense should be utilised and the question asked " Does a player trying to protect himself warrant a 90% chance of a team conceding a goal from a penalty depriving a football club of two points".

The penalty rules should not be as they currently stand where any foul even if a goal doesn't look likely is a spot kick as it's disproportionate to the offence. I would propose a free kick maybe in the area from where the offence took place similar to a keeper back pass scenario if he picks it up. It would still punish the person committing the foul but not give away a penalty which is a complete game changer/ruiner depending what team it is given to. A player instinctively putting his arm up should not be used to define a result in a 90 minute football game

Andy Fincher
15/07/2020 20:32
It was dangerous play. Should have been a free-kick to Wolves or, as nothing came of it, play on.
Ridiculous decision.

Clearly dangerous play but the laws are so weighted in favour of giving penalties it was never going to be overturned. I've seen players with their arms by their side and had balls blasted like rockets from 6 yards out get pens given against them

Andy Fincher
15/07/2020 20:51
Whether we qualify for Champions League via the Europa League or no, I have no idea, but it won't happen this season by means of the Premier League.
Rather than looking at teams above I think we should be looking at what's going on below as the chasers are closing. We've had a great season so far and I would hate to end with no European qualification at all.

an angry wolf
15/07/2020 20:53
Thinking about it , I dont think it is "dangerous play" as a striker is entitled to go for a bicycle kick late in the game- if it was a wolves striker we would all be saying he was entitled to go for it. The problem is in the rules- a penalty should not be given for any old foul/handball but clear goal scoring opportunities denied to the attacking team by a foul. The laws of a foul inside the pen area should be different as a penalty is such a serious punishment for any team and common sense of a player protecting himself is not " denying a team a clear goal scoring opportunity".

Most of the pens are given by handballs that are contentious rather than other fouls and it's the handball rule that needs to change asap

Andy Fincher
15/07/2020 20:58
I agree. It was never going to be overturned. I've made my feelings known about the pile of @#$%& which is VAR several times. The decision to give a penalty should never have been given in the first place.
I'm not one to have a go at referees as a rule. They have a difficult job and by and large do it well but this was one of those the ref got wrong.

I respect your opinion Angry but we'll have to disagree on this one. Doherty's jumping and still has a bootfull of studs around his swede. The attacker's foot is too high. Dangerous play for me.

an angry wolf
15/07/2020 21:25
I suppose you could argue any foot above waist height constitutes dangerous play but then every bicycle kick would be disallowed incase a defenders head was near. In any event we are all agreed that doc had good reason to have his hand up to prevent his teeth getting knocked out and in situations like this common sense has to prevail.

Lupinehowler
15/07/2020 21:36

I'm not sure it's as cut and dried as that Andy. With Man City & Man Utd both having the chance of getting to the FA Cup Final, if one of them were to win it and finish in the Top 4, I believe that might create another Europa League place like it did for us last year when we finished in 7th place.

With all due respect Chesh, it is as cut and dried as that. Spuds are one point behind, Sheffield two and Arsenal three. As much as I hope we do, we are not going to reach the Champions League via the Premier League. We need to keep an eye on what's going on below us and not above.

We’re probably at cross purposes here Andy. I agree that the Champions League is beyond our reach but think we are still in with a good shout to be in the Europa Lge again next season, particularly if City or Utd win the FA Cup. I think three points against Palace on Monday is imperative for us.
