Match Thread: Watford FC vs Wolves

A Meeting of the W's

By Wolves
January 1 2020

For the first game of the new decade Wolves travel for another away game today to face their FA Cup Semi final foes of 2019 at Watford in what could be a tricky game.

Watford's fortunes have improved recently since the appointment of Nigel Pearson, which has also coincided with the return and goalscoring of Captain Troy Deeney, so this could be another difficult match for Wolves. Coach Nuno Espirito Santo will be hoping his team will have overcome the disappointment of the VAR-decision-affected loss at Liverpool and be ready for this challenge.

Willy Boly and Morgan Gibbs-White remain on the injury list but there does not appear to any new issues. Rotation will surely happen again, although Max Kilman and Pedro Neto in particular were praised for their performances at Anfield.

Our referee will be another new lad on the block Andrew Madley

This board will hopefully carry a degree of commentary for this afternoon's 3pm kick off, and board members are encouraged to post their observations for the benefit of those unable to follow the game.

Watford have their tails up so will be battling for their share of the points but we should have the quality and determination to more than match them.
Feel that there will be goals in this game and can see us victorious at the end, 2-1 to Wolves.

So Ruben Neves and Diogo Jota start on the bench today with Pedro Meto holding on to his starting place, playing a 4-4-3 line-up

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 15:05
Playing in our green away kit today. Ryan Bennett also holds on to his place in defence, whilst Raul Jimenez will be seeking to become our top scoring player ever today!!

Cheshire wolf

Wolves get their first free kick despite two earlier appeals.

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 15:10
Doc takes his eye off a pass out from Rui & lets it out for a throw in to W'ford.

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 15:14
Good save by Foster to stop - I think it was Doc - who was though on him

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 15:17
Raul takes the ball down and has clear sight of goal but puts it wide

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 15:20
Well created break forward by W'ford, but the final ball goes straight across our goal with nobody threatening

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 15:22
More good speedy attacking play from W'ford but Chalobah's final ball over the bar

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 15:23
Crude challenge by Dawson on Neto earns him a yellow card. Neto seems OK

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 15:25
Neto goes down on the edge of the box, but probably just a tangle of legs

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 15:27
Neto goes down in the area & is booked for a dive. Being checked by VAR. NO PENALTY & yellow card stands

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 15:29
Good break by Raul but he shoots form ridiculously far out & goes wide

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 15:31
Good save by Rui, but they break again and our old nemesis Delefeu scores from left side of our area with a great finish
Watford 1 Wolves 0

Here we go again - seems like we have to concede in order to get going..

It seems that way Wolverina, but I have to say W'ford are looking confident and well organised and are finding away through us well. We are a bit sloppy up to now - hope it will improve!

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 15:37
Good break between Doc & Adama earns a corner. Comes to nothing

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 15:39
Jimenez isn't tuned in with the rest of the attack so far!!

wolverina
01/01/2020 15:39
Well it's been a long season, but we have to get battling .. maybe Nuno should give that famous half time talk before the kick off!

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 15:42
It was a poor backpass by Donk which set up W'ford's goal, which was beautifully taken. Donk not particularly effective in midfield so far. Delafeu has another chance but shoots wide

wolverina
01/01/2020 15:43
Who's supposed to be looking after Deulofeu - sounds like he's running riot... come on one of you, get a grip!

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 15:46
Adama gets a free kick after having 4 players to try & beat. Saiss hurt in a clash of heads, then a W'ford player is on the floor blocking Neto's cross - VAR looking at possible hand ball. Saiss should probably had a free kick against Deeney. No penalty it seems.

wolverina
01/01/2020 15:47
Well we know that if VAR's involved we'll get nowt!

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 15:48
4 added minutes at the end of first half.Saiss OK to continue

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 15:50
Good break by W'ford- Deeney feeds Sarr but he puts it into side netting. Nuno doesn't look happy!!

wolverina
01/01/2020 15:51
Let's hope he gives it to the with both barrels!

Cheshire wolf

Half time whistle blows. Disappointing first half for Wolves losing by a goal scored by Delafeu. Our defence hasn't been bad, but Watford have been good in attack. I have concerns about Donk in midfield at the expense of Neves as I don't think he's as mobile or good at tackling in that position. Also disappointed with Raul so far today as he doesn't seem connected to the rest of attack today. Interesting to spree how long Neto gets in second half before we see Jota
Watford 1 Wolves 0

Sloppy overall for Wolves. Started slowly, then far more controlled, Doc and Jimenez should both be on the score sheet but the Watford goal commenced another period when we descended somewhat, especially at the back. Traore not having a great day, nor is anybody really. Another mountain to climb.

Nice finish from Delafaou, sadly the opportunity set up by a howling Donk back pass

As for the Neto ‘dive’ and yellow - can someone please explain the difference between this event and that of the Marhez incident of Friday night??!!

C’mon Wolves - must do better! Nuno won’t be happy with that

It just gets worse... not a Happy New Year at the moment.

Cheshire wolf

Just got back online to see Watford score their second. Again Delafeu di d the damage before setting up Decoure whose shot deflected off Coady into top right corner way beyond Rui. Poor start to this half.
Watford 2 Wolves 0

Neves & Vinagre joining the game I think

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 16:14
Bennett replaced by Neves - with Donk going into defence - & Vinagre replaces Jonny - who has actually played well!!

Ivybridge Wolf
01/01/2020 16:14
More sloppy play, we couldn’t keep the ball which lead to their chance - big deflection to accelerate the ball into the back of the net.

Can’t see anyway back - at least not today. We have no momentum. Bennett and Jonny off. Neves and Vinagre on - will that do it?

Moutinho' ankle clipped by Capoue but no yellow card.

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 16:18
Good dribbling by Adama to set up Joao but his shot Ian tame

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 16:21
Neto shoots from distance - it's deflected and flies over Foster into the corner and after all he gets his first PL goal!!
Watford 2 Wolves 1

I should have more faith! Chasing the equaliser now.

Neto deserves that goal

Good reaction from Wolves. Corner and shot by Neves deflected for another corner. Comes to nothing but Wolves still press & much more attacking with Neves in midfield

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 16:26
Wolves putting W'ford under real pressure now and Neto is replaced by Jota after getting his first goal

wolverina
01/01/2020 16:26
Come on Wolves, you can do this! Just had a horse come in at 12-1, so nothing is impossible!

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 16:31
Well done Wolverina - happy days!
Raul fails to anticipate Adama's pass after another good break.
Jota on his bike into the area & pulled down by Kabasele who only gets a yellow card !! VAR lookinhpg at it, meanwhile it's in a good position for a Neves special.
Yellow card overturned by VAR and Kabasele sent off !!! Now we need to score from the free kick

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 16:33
Joao takes free kick (I don't know why instead of Neves!!) deflected and easily collected by Foster. Delafeu sacrificed - thankfully - to reinforce W'ford defence

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 16:36
Fine cross by Vinagre met by Doc but great save by Foster. Wolves pressing relentlessly. Vinagre just unable to reach another touch line ball.

wolverina
01/01/2020 16:37
Well that's one way of getting rid - now we just need to get a couple of goals!

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 16:40
Watford stillattackingwhich is good for us if we can get them on the counter attack. We are so much better with Neves in midfield & Vinagre's speed. Troy Deeney being an arse4ole to Saiss without any problem at all!!

Adama to Raul to Jota in the area, to Vupinagre who lashes it high & wide, but a promising move all the same

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 16:48
We'll probably get more bad press after Raul punches the ball out of a dawdling ball boy's hands to get on with the game more quickly! Our problem now is whatever we do it will be 'against ten men' again!!

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 16:51
Into the final minute of normal time & Raul is punished for jumping with Foster. Watford fans right behind their team and adding the pressure.
Five added minutes to play

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 16:54
Watford keep the ball in the corner under the direction of Deeney then make a substitution. I think we've lost this on in the first half to be honest. Deeney gets a yellow card for kicking the ball away

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 16:56
Adama wins a free kick on the right edge of their area - but Joao's cross cleared then we concede a free kick

Cheshire wolf
01/01/2020 17:01
Ruben Neves takes our final shot from just outside the area but it goes over the bar as the final whistle sounds. A poor first game of the year and decade for Wolves, conceding two sloppy goals, and we can't always come back from that. Squad rotation was possibly part of the problem - I don't think Donk is anywhere near as effective in midfield as in defence, and certainly not to replace Neves, and perhaps that's what needs to be considered in the transfer window! Neto worked hard and it was pleasing to see him get his first goal for the club after his heartbreak on Sunday, but overall a disappointing but perhaps predictable result considering Watford Run of form since Pearson took over.
Watford 2 Wolves 1

Really disappointing - we are woeful at converting real chances - suggest they have a few hours shooting practice.

Anyway, apart from today, Happy New Year to you all!

Ivybridge Wolf

We just didn’t do enough today. Versus 10 men, we got some decent crosses in from both sides but never not enough Wolves bodies in the box to capitalise.

What about the time wasting from Watford, that includes the ball boys! Still, their resurgence under Pearson continues.

despite our below performance, it does grate how we gifted the goal scoring opportunities, especially the first. Very frustrating afternoon.

Manchester United on Saturday, I wonder what the starting line up will be?

UTW!

No standout performances from any of our players today which resulted in a very tired performance, lacking the usual energetic approach we generally have. Watford played with a determination we didn’t match and although we were the architects of our own downfall our response was not what we have been used to, poor passing and poor choices abounded.
I’m sure Nuno will address the shortcomings and have us ready for Utd.
