Match Thread: Wolves vs Fulham

By Wolves
May 4 2019

After receiving an Honourary Doctorate from University of Wolverhampton (shared with the whole of the club) Nuno Espirito Santo will immediatley  set out to cement Wolves position in 7th place of the Premiership today, seeking to achieve European football for next season.

Having secured three consecutive PL wins recently Interim Manager Scott Parker will be hoping to upset Wolves fans this afternoon, in the knowledge that Wolves have struggled this season against teams in the bottom six. Wolves fans however will be hoping for a repeat of the recent wins away at Watford and at Molineux over Manchester United and Arsenal. Wolves currently lead Everton by one point and Leicester City by three points in the chase for 7th spot, and a win today would move them one step closer to a place in the Europa League next season if Manchester City win the FA Cup.

Once again Nuno has a fully fit squad to choose from, which could possibly see a place within it for goalkeeper Will Norris and defender Max Wilman.

Our referee today will be Jonathan Moss

This board will hopefully carry regular updates on the progress of the game for those unable to follow it, and members are encourage to post their observations.

Should be a carnival atmosphere at the Mol today, just hoping for a result to match.

An unchanged line-up for the eleven today, but two changes to the subs bench with John Ruddy and Romain Saiss dropping out.
Line-up: Patricio, Bennett, Coady, Boly, Doherty, Dendoncker, Neves, Moutinho, Jonny, Jimenez, Jota

Subs: Norris, Vinagre, Kilman, Gibbs-White, Costa, Cavaleiro, Troare

Fulham field a front line of Sessignon, Cairney, Babel and Mitrovic so they certainly carry a threat

Hope it turns into a great afternoon for everyone. Bit chilly up here in t'north - central heating on and woolly socks!

Good shot from Joe Bryan after a poor pass by Leander well collected by Rui

Jota denied a penalty/free kick after excellent dribbling from him on the edge of their area

Cheshire wolf
04/05/2019 14:09
Rui shouts the free kick ais his then fumbles it & is lucky to get a way with it. Jota goes down in the area & is booked rightly for simulation

BBC website says he was clipped so shouldn't have been booked. Bit harsh after just being clipped and denied a free kick. Hope it's not going to be one of those afternoons...

Joao to Raul to Jota who stays onside but his shot is saved for a corner. Cleared to Neves but his long distance shot is high & wide

Lupinehowler

Evenly matched so far. Jota with the best chances.

I didn't see him clipped Wolverina and it would have been a very soft penalty if given.

Joao sets up Jota and his shot grazes the post - on the wrong side!! He is doing so much good work but still needs to be careful now when tackling

F'ham have changed to playing three at the back and are trying to match us. Good attack from them ends with a very poor cross by Sessegnon

Good tackle by Joe Bryan to stop Doc as he gets into the pen area.wolves doing all the attacking at the moment & F'ham poor when they mount an attack

Cheshire wolf

Doc blocked off as he attacks but gets nothing then Moss gives a free kick for a nothing challenge on Babel. Crowd not impressed!!

Starting to look like it’s only a matter of time before we get the break we need.

It's just not working for Wolves so far this afternoon. Five minutes plus added time to play

Lupinehowler
04/05/2019 14:44
Would be a good game for Vinagre to be let off the leash.

Cheshire wolf
04/05/2019 14:45
Good break by Jonny and Raul for a corner which comes to n.g. Still attacking but it breaks down

And possibly Traore LH. I've lost my feed at the moment so don't know what is going on, but now see it's half time!!

0-0 at half time, Wolves have been the better side but unable to break down the Fulham defence —— sound a familiar situation?

Cheshire wolf
04/05/2019 15:03
He we go again.with no changes to either side

Cheshire wolf
04/05/2019 15:07
Doc has had no joy trying to get past Bryan on the right wing today and a lot of our passing has been sloppy

Cheshire wolf
04/05/2019 15:11
Great link up play between Doc & Raul. Jota getting nothing from the referee again

Cheshire wolf
04/05/2019 15:12
Jota just where you would want him to be when he gets the ball but he fires it past the far post

Lupinehowler
04/05/2019 15:12
Pressuring again and some fluid play involving Jota Doc and Raul.

Cheshire wolf
04/05/2019 15:16
Another break by a Jota but no final ball

04/05/2019 15:18
Fulham gaining a bit in confidence so getting a goal now would settle my nerves.

Finishing 8th is the same as 17th for all intensive purposes.. I'm not sure the players even want to qualify for Europe and if not should be shipped out for those with a modicum of ambition. Coady said in an interview recently he doesnt care whether the club finishes 7th or 8th so would imagine the players are playing to have a longer summer holiday which is outrageous if true.

Long range shot from Neves palmed away by keeper

Good effort from Neves well saved. Raul heads over from a corner

Attendance is 30,346 - the first time since 1959 season that we have had over 30,000 at every home game of the season!!

Lupinehowler
04/05/2019 15:26
Fulham are opening up at the back so Traore could easily exploit the space.

Cheshire wolf
04/05/2019 15:27
Cairney puts the ball over the bar, then Mitrovic wins a free kick in a challenge by Neves. At last Jota gets a free kick!!

04/05/2019 15:28
This game shows why none of the strikers should win player of the season- when a team sits back its the same old garbage of being powder puff upfront. The wins against United/Arsenal mean nothing if we dont win this and get a European spot

Cheshire wolf
04/05/2019 15:30
Joao puts free kick in but it's just behind Boly. Referee making a name for himself.
Neves shot rebounds to Doc and he puts it away but is offside

Doherty puts the ball in the net but ruled offside

Dendonker—— 1-0

Cheshire wolf

I hope so Cheshire, but listening to main stream media you often wonder whether the mass hysteria against the Europa infiltrates to players mentality... I want those cheap trip to eastern Europe next season lol

Would be nice not to have to beat Liverpool - then we probably will on the basis that we always play better against better teams...

Cheshire wolf
04/05/2019 15:53
That's it all over!
We now need to support Man City in beating Watford at Wembley then we will be in Europe next season. A difficult game for Wolves this afternoon against a team who had nothing to lose and all to win. Jota had no luck in front of goal at all today. Next Sunday we play Liverpool at Anfield in another interesting game.

Lupinehowler
04/05/2019 15:55
Made hard work of that but three points is three points.
Onward to Anfield and another three points.

A really decent end to the season! Loved seeing Dr Nuno getting his cap and gown before the match, and enjoyed the football too, though wondered if it was going to end goalless for long periods. Fulham were that bad and not sure how Mitrovic missed his chance - they had another gilt edged chance too, however for us not to win it would have been a travesty! We huffed and puffed on some occasions however we played some very good stuff on others and their keeper was on excellent form ... sadly. Excellent volley by the Donk, great goal. Relief as well.
Jota was brilliant, did everything but score. A pest from start to finish but picked on unfairly by the keeper who was determined to keep Jota out! That half volley thunderbolt in the second half, what a shot, smashing the bar via Rico’s able hands!
A nice team performance, 3 additional points and good to see the presentations at the end in cool Wolverhampton sunshine. UTW!
