Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Sunderland v Newcastle Utd

Newcastle United travel to the Stadium of Light for tomorrow’s lunchtime kick off. Newcastle go into the game having won three, drawn one and lost two of their last six games in all competitions. Sunderland on the other hand host on the back of three consecutive defeats, five defeats from their last six games and just one win which came in the Third Round of the Capital One Cup.
Sunderland fans may say they have been unlucky with a bad run of games so far this season, (they lost to Arsenal, and West Brom before sacking manager Di Canio and then lost to Liverpool and Manchester United before signing Poyet) but their most recent defeat against Swansea last weekend clearly highlighted to new manager Gus Poyet how big a challenge his has at the club.
Newcastle are likely to be without captain Fabricio Coloccini, who has recently been back to Argentina to receive treatment on a groin injury. Colo returned to training this week but whilst manager Alan Pardew has said he has an outside chance of playing, it looks unlikely.
Steven Taylor (hamstring) is back in contention having recovered in time to play some part of the game, but its too soon for Massadio Haidara (knee) who is due back next weekend.
If Steven Taylor is not fit to start, Newcastle could name Paul Dummett in the starting eleven, which would be a dream come true for the 22 year old who is from Newcastle and has come through the Academy.
Pardew however has confirmed that if fit, Taylor will start as he needs experience in the back four. He said;
“He will get the nod over Paul because you need experience in the derby but if Steven or Willo have a knock I will turn to Paul no problem. He has proved against the toughest of opposition that he can handle it.”
Newcastle are without Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa who got himself sent off against Liverpool last weekend.
Guy Poyet’s only injury concern was Wes Brown (calf) and he is due to undergo a late fitness test which means he could feature in his first game since January 2012.
Former manager Di Canio secured a 3-0 victory at St James’ Park back in April and now on home turf Poyet hopes to achieve the same feat. He said;
"This is a game to win, so everything is set up to win this football game. Then we need to wait and see the result, but we are focused completely on winning this football game “
…and once again Lee Cattermole is claiming; "I'm more mature now, 100%," under the new manager. He also said something similar when Martin O’Neil was manager back in September 2012 and 10 days later he got sent off against MK Dons.
Fact: Of 22 games between Newcastle and Sunderland, Newcastle have won 9, drawn 9 and lost 4.
Fact: Sunderland are the only team since the 1999/2000 season to have picked up just 1 point in their first 8 games and only the 4th team ever to perform so poorly.
Fact: Newcastle have scored 2 goals in each of their last 5 League games.

So much for Haidara not being fit enough and Steven Taylor being fit enough to start.
We are in trouble if willo or dummet have to go off, think i would have stuck Good on the bench.

I am a lot happier than the last derby debacle.
We at least were the better side, this time (not that, that means much mind)

Tiote again put in a solid performance, lets hope this is him getting back to his best.
Pardew again showed that he was able to change things tactically and improve the way we were playing.
Things would have probably been a lot different had we not been playing with our 4th choice cb and i was going to call Dummett our 5th choice cb but he's not he's a young inexperienced fullback who has been thrown in to plug a hole.
Sunderland played a very intelligent game today and Lee Probert let them, everytime we tried to make a break there was a little tug or a little trip on the attacker just enough to break up the momentum and it worked, the ref was aware of this as he was giving free kicks for them, a few yellow cards would have stopped this and opened the game up more.
I still think though apart from the opening 10 minutes we, were the better side.
If it had been me, I would of brought Shola on earlier and kept remy on although playing as a true number 9, and hope the two could of combined.
I though Tiote spent most of the game playing way to far back (although I guess this was a deliberate ploy to protect and inexperienced cb) it seemed to make the midfield disjointed.
If it had been anyone but Sunderland I think we could just class it as one of those days, but for those of us that live here and know sunderland fans, we will be hearing about this every bloody day until the next one comes along.
During the game yesterday we had nobody between willo and dummett to bring the ball out of defence, with tiote sitting far deeper than usual to protect the cb's, cabaye was left to come deep to get the ball off them. This meant that he was trying to start our attacks from our 18 yard line rather than 50/60 yards further up the pitch like in recent games.It was a similar scenario as last season when we struggled because we had lost Cabaye's effectiveness with him sitting so deep.
