Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Crystal Palace

Newcastle United host Crystal Palace this evening in one of two Championship fixtures and will be looking for a convincing win after being eliminated from the FA Cup at the weekend and seeing rivals Nottingham Forest close the gap at the top of the table to a 1 goal difference.
Newcastle who have two games in hand (including this one) over Forest have won just one of their last six games in all competitions, drawn four and lost one. Palace travel on the back of three draws and three wins in all competitions.
Newcastle will be without Steven Taylor who is suffering with a knee injury, but Hughton could hand a home debut to his latest signing, defender Mike Williamson. Shola Ameobi could play after recovering from a shoulder complaint and if he does he will be making his 200th appearance for the club; Nicky Butt who had a calf injury could also return. Fans will welcome back Peter Lovenkrands who is expected to have returned from compassionate leave after the death of his father.
Joey Barton remains the clubs only long term injury, but Danny Simpson is out with an ankle problem. Wayne Routledge could be handed a debut, whilst Ryan Taylor is suspended following his sending off at the weekend.
Crystal Palace manager Neil Warnock will struggle to name a squad full of options after being limited to just five substitutes at the weekend. He is without Sean Scannell (hamstring), Paddy McCarthy (shoulder) and Darryl Flahaven (jaw), whilst Claude Davis was stretchered off at the weekend after sustaining a neck injury and may not be available either.
Warnock will have Lee Hills available for selection but defender Clint Hill is 50/50.
Victor Moses will not be available to play after adminstrators withdrew him from the squad
Former Newcastle United player Darren Ambrose is the one to watch out for this evening as he has scored 14 goals so far promoting Palace to 9th in the table.
Fact: Newcastle United are the only side unbeaten at home this season.
Fact: Crystal Palace have only won once at St James' Park in 37 years.

The only good thing about Enrique getting injured tonight is that we still have time to sign a back up left back now that he is injured. Hope its not that serious though. But talk about a make shift defence! Lets hope we get another to settle everyone's nerves...

Listening to the live radio commentary and apparently we are shite...can pass the ball or hold it, all we do is hoof it up the field for Andy Carroll....come on you Toon we need better than this....thank to their skipper for being a toon fan and scoring in his own net

ta. not easy to listen to mind. making hard work of this match, which looked for all the world like a chance to rack up some goals and build confidence. instead we are picking up injuries and only one goal ahead..
phew! ranger two nil.one on one through against the keeper, job done, sounded great
2-0 !...good, but we still didn't play well, most important we have 3 points, on negative hope the injuries are not too bad...we still have 5 days to sign cover for injured players
It might not have been our best performance but its three points none the less. We are now EIGHT points clear of West Brom.

Stats I was reading on BBC had us with 57% of possession in the first half. Is that accurate? If so, once again-we need a finisher to convert that sort of dominance into goals (or at least shots-we finished with 2 on target...wtf?).
Palace got stuck in but we were horrible tonight. hughton didnt make it easy like putting Pancrate on at right back. Kadar did well when switched over to LB as he is definately all left foot. Williamson won everything in the air and looked steady.
Routledge changed things completely for us and now has to start next game.
I didnt even know Nolan was on the pitch. I feel for him as it just passes him by in the middle. Here is hoping he plays one up front with Nolan pushing on against Lec on saturday with Rout, Guth and Jonas pushing forward.

Great to get the gap and really puts pressure on the two chasing us. Good news on Williamson but does anybody know how long Enrique is out for, did it sound a bad injury.

Dont know the full crack on Jose but looked like his hamstring the way he pulled up. He has been out before with this type of injury but has played a lot of games this season. Hope it is just a tweak.
On Nolan Im not sure we could take the risk, suppose a rest might be needed but I think its just the position he is playing in and Hughton needs to make some tough decisions about a regular forward line up. Nolan is one of our main players and a one that a lot of people look to on the pitch.

was just making the point about nolan on other thread. could be that if we rested him, and tried something else, he'd regain the surprise factor which gave us a lot of success earlier in the season. we may also find another way to win games, which would help us to be less predictable. we now have a winger for the right in routledge, maybe guthrie could take nolans shirt for a week or two?

i think we need to be able to move the ball into dangerous areas tunyc, 57pc may be a lot but not when the oppo easily keep you at arms length. penetration is the key!

ambrose was fullback at one point. one of those days for both teams. he's a central attacking mid though. as to whether he's any better than barton...

Ambrose and Barton have about the same goal scoring record in the PL, but Ambrose doesn't come with nearly as much baggage.
I mentioned Ambrose but mainly cause of the non risk factor, again a steal could be there.

I would rest Nolan and give Guthrie the run out, it may give everybody a kick up the @rse and try a different way of playing, if it doesn't work then what a player to stick on when time is running out if we need to get the result.
Bring in Ambrose another player and getting quite excited seeing us bring in some players and also getting linked to Moses. I stated no at first about the lad but after thinking we need to be looking ahead and some players are bound to go either in this window but more likely in the summer. yeah waffles, but then again, nolan has a comparable goal record to that of ambrose, what he (nolan) doesnt offer is all round midfield play. i'd settle for less goals and more bite, from an attacking midfielder. cant have it all i suppose. nothing against ambrose, but he has always seemed a bit lightweight. perhaps he has matured into a player who can compete in the prem, i havent seen enough personally to say either way
We were poor on Wednesday but was anybody surprised by Rangers goal or more precisely the setting up of it. Routledge played the ball into the channel for Ranger to run onto. He had also played a couple of neat balls through which I cant remember seeing many of this season.
I think that Guthrie could do a similar thing if he was brought into the centre. Also with Barton coming back as well.

there were two great through balls, one by jonas which sent enrique to the edge of the box early on, and routledge putting ranger through for a very good finish.

Im sure he will even with Palace chasing the game. I cant say I had seen much of Ranger before he made the breakthrough into the first team but maybe the way we have been playing doesnt really suit the lad.
Wonder because he is a big lad the balls have continued to be pumped high into the box. Yeah, he is decent in the air but maybe him running onto the ball would be better.

i love ranger hes got it all strength height pace and hes a handful and from the palace game obviously very smart finisher but one thing i think is interesting is his confidence could work out to be a good or bad thing
The problem is when the players see a big lad on the pitch they always go long ball, look what happens when Crouch plays for England, the easy ball is the long ball when actually the lad is better with the ball at his feet and Ranger would be better with the ball at his feet or just infront of him so he can use his pace and strength.
The players we have at the moment mean we have to play this way, as we have nobody in the centre of the park that can just play the ball like Emre could. It may be a bit different now with the 2 wingers we have but if we want to play good football we all know and quite a few of us have said it before we need somebody in the centre of midfield.
With the current crop of centre midfielder unless we play Guthrie we will be stuck in this way of play, I would give the lad a run out over Nolan at the moment, and this isn't a anti Nolan thing as he has done great this season with his goals but he isn't offering much more.
