CC Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Peterborough v Newcastle Utd

By Tyne-Talk
September 22 2009

Newcastle United travel to London Road this evening for their 3rd round Carling Cup tie. Peterborough host on the back of 2 wins, 3 1-1 draws and 1 defeat in their last 6 games, from all competitions, whilst Newcastle start on the back of 5 wins and 1 defeat in their last 6 games.

Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson is likely to recall Chris Whelpdale, Toumani Diagouraga and Tommy Williams all of which he substituted at the weekend during their 1st league win of the season. His only injury problem lies with Charlie Lee (ankle).

For Newcastle Chris Hughton is without new loan signing Zurab Khizanishvili who is cup tied after playing for Blackburn in an earlier round. Danny Simpson remains a doubt with an ankle injury he picked up on Saturday whilst Shola Ameobi (foot) and Jonas Gutierrez (hamstring) both remain sidelined.

Hughton is expected to rest some of his key players this evening giving youngsters Nile Ranger, Kazenga LuaLua, Haris Vuckic, Tamas Kader and Ryan Donaldson a chance.

Fact: This is the 1st time that Peterborough have progressed past the 2nd round of the Cup since the 1993/1994 season.

Fact: This game is the only game in this round which will guarantee the elimination of a Championship team.

Good to see the kids getting a shot, but would have liked more of them in the starting line up

I thought we could defend now unlike the previous seasons, hopefully none of them will go down the Bramble way of defending

its about experience for the young lads tonight. a result would have been a bonus, but this competition is very low priority this season

I fully agree the experience for the kids is more important than playing the strongest team, just wished more kids started.

F@cks#ke 2-0, hopefully we can get one back soon

We're getting owned by a side that looks like ccc relegation fodder. Not good, no matter how you look at it.

Sounds like the officiating has been pretty bad. Can anyone confirm? Were they legitimate penalty appeals?

We've had no shots on target in 45 minutes! and that with players like Lovenkrands and Guthrie in the team. Doesn't look too good, but at least now the youngsters will learn from tonight's experience.

Meh, why put in the "big boys" down 2-0, down to 10 men and not really interested in winning. Risky, very risky.

F00king disgusting.

It's better that we're out of this competition, but goddamn that was an awful performance. Gonna take a while to get that taste out of my mouth.

Best thing that could of happened.
Now perhaps we can concentrate our wafer thin squad on the league

Losing isn't the end of the world in the cup, but losing Guthrie is bad, the only plus is that is was a double yellow card, so he will miss one game only.
