Hughton: We Have A Good Defence But Need More Goals

Newcastle United caretaker manager Chris Hughton has spoken ahead of this afternoon's game against Plymouth Argyle and is keen to get back on track after their midweek defeat. He praised his side for their commitment to the game but insisted that players need to be scoring more goals to get back to their winning streak.

He said;

"We hope we do get a big crowd again. There was wonderful support at Blackpool, and when you lose, you always feel for those supporters.

The best thing you can do is put things right for them. They travel, and they would have been as disappointed as we were by the end. We're sorry we didn't give them more.

Now we have an opportunity to put it right, and it will be a valuable three points against Plymouth - we must make sure we get them.

We hope we can pick up where we left off at the end of the Blackpool game. We created chances, and we'll be hoping to do the same again.

I won't chastise this group of lads for one performance - they have given everything so far.

We've regrouped and we'll look to get back on track."

Reflecting on his side's recent performances and looking ahead to their upcoming games Hughton said;

"The lack of chances in our last couple of games is a worry. It is something we have spoken about. To win football matches, you have to be creative and score goals.

We have been fortunate in that we have managed to have a very tight group of players who have been able to have a defensive discipline in the team, which has enabled us to keep clean sheets - but we need to be scoring more goals.

It is an option that we have got. I think probably Kevin Nolan is the nearest we have to a number ten as such, a more advanced midfield player that you know can almost pass as a front player.

That is one option we know we have with Kevin. We have done it with Danny Guthrie. We have employed that perhaps more because of the injuries we have had.

In the first game of the season, we were able to go with two big lads up front and that is certainly a very good option we have. Nile (Ranger) is an option alongside Andy (Carroll) against Plymouth.

There are a large number of games in a short period of time and at times, to get the best out of everybody, you have to freshen things up a bit."

This is a bit depressing. The clear solution here is to get in at least one more outright forward.

Hughton doesn't even consider it here. Or maybe that's the implied point of the whole thing?

*once again, clutches at straws*

And of course, on Tuesday night we have a meaningless Carling cup game (Sm95)
