Newcastle United host Plymouth Argyle in this afternoon's game for the first time in 18 years, on the back of a 2-1 defeat in midweek following a successful start to the season. Plymouth haven't won a game in their last 6 making them bottom, whilst Newcastle boast just the 1 defeat all season leaving them 3rd in the Championship table.

For Newcastle both Andy Carroll (who scored in midweek) and Peter Lovenkrands who has shown his fitness will be hoping for a starting place this afternoon, whilst new loan signing Zurab Khizanishvili has been given an automatic place in the squad and is seeking his debut after signing a 3 month deal from Blackburn Rovers.

Alan Smith returns to the team having served his 1 match suspension in midweek, but Shola Ameobi (foot) and Jonas Gutierrez (hamstring) both remain sidelined through injury.

Bradley Wright-Phillips is likely to start for Plymouth Argyle this afternoon, after recovering from a knee injury and 20 year old Aussie defender Shane Lowry is seeking his debut after signing a 3 month loan deal from Aston Villa.

Fact: Plymouth won their last game against Newcastle 2-0 in 1991.

Fact: Newcastle United are the only Championship team not to have conceded a goal on home turf so far this season and have the strongest defence in the league having conceded just 3 goals in 7 games.

It's a win-win, regardless. As long as we finish the job, one of those sides will fall away just a bit. It's going to take several wins in a row to create any real separation, though.
