Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle v Leicester City

By Tyne-Talk
August 30 2009

Newcastle United host Leicester City in tomorrow night's televised clash, on the back of their most successful start to a league campaign in 14 years. With 3 League wins and 1 draw they go into the game with 10 points. Leicester aren't far behind with 8 points, but travel on the back of a 2-1 defeat in the 2nd round of the Carling Cup in midweek.

Chris Hughton will be without strikers Shola Ameobi, who could potentially be out for up to 4 weeks with a foot injury picked up in Newcastle's midweek Carling Cup game, Andy Carroll and Xisco both of whom have groin injuries.

Jonas Gutierrez is a doubt as he struggles with a hamstring injury but both Nicky Butt and Joey Barton are ready to return to the starting eleven.

Leicester, now managed by former Newcastle United caretaker manager Nigel Pearson are hoping Ryan McGivern will be in the squad after completing his loan move from Manchester City.

Striker Steve Howard is also hoping to be fit in time to face the club he held a season ticket at as a boy.

Newcastle have won their last 3 home ties against Leicester City and are unbeaten in their last 6, A win will see them top the Championship table, whilst a win for Leicester and a better goal difference than West Brom could see them do the same.

My bet is he plays it safe and plays Smith

I think it will be Smith, but only because we can play Butt in the midfield where Smith would normally play, and midfield is where all the depth is

guess we'll know soon enough

If Shola isn't fully fit it would be stupid to play him as what happens if he plays and suffers a bigger injury, he could be out for a while. Is one game worth it

we need to improve some sloppy passing in the first half but at times we do look like we have enough quality to score a couple if we don't waste the ball!!

Could have been a real banana skin. Great result in the end but felt the problems with last season popped up in the first half. We were sloppy with our passing with some of the players thinking they were too good for the game. We nearly paid the price in the first half but Harper came up trumps.

Second half a totally different story. Ranger was absent in the first half but what a turn around. I think he just chilled out and did his thing. Good running and held up and laid the ball off very well. Mature performance from him and I was pleased to see the other young players coming on.

Harper, top saves.
Jose needs to switch on with his passing.
Simpson is no centre half but is so tidy with the ball.
Taylor massive presence.
R. Taylor got forward very well and always seemed as though he wanted the ball.
Guthrie see above. great goal.
Smith had a massive performance again.
Barton is a smart player, keeps us ticking over and pushes us on.
Geremi, ok, moved the ball canny.
Nolan put a real shift in, massive focus for the ball.
Ranger as above.

Overall great, just need to stay switched on or someone will do our legs.
