Match Preview/Stats/Thread: West Brom v Newcastle

By Tyne-Talk
August 8 2009

Chris Hughton takes charge of the first game of the season as Newcastle head to West Brom's Hawthorn stadium for a 5.30pm Kick Off. Newcastle have spent the summer clearing out players and not replacing them whilst West Brom have had a management reshuffle and look ready for the season ahead.

Newcastle start the game on the back of 3 wins and 2 draws in 6 pre-season games, whilst West Brom won just 1 game, picking up 3 draws in their 6 pre-season games.

Newcastle will be without Nicky Butt who picked up a hand injury in pre-season and Danny Guthrie (hamstring), whilst the clearout saw Obafemi Martins, Habib Beye, Sebastien Bassong, Mark Viduka and David Edgar all depart over the summer.

Andy Carroll, Newcastle's leading scorer for 2009 will be pushing to start ahead of Shola Ameobi and midfielder Alan Smith is expected to captain the side as he seeks his first domestic goal in nearly 4 years.

Joey Barton is likely to be absent after he abandoned training last night due to a disagreement between himself, Fabricio Coloccini and Jonas Gutierrez forcing Hughton to change his plans at the last minute.

Ishmael Miller is out for West Brom with a cruciate problem as is Neil Clement who is suffering with a knee injury, whilst James Morrison (heel) and Chris Brunt (thigh) are both a doubt.

There will be a 1 minute applause in tribute to Sir Bobby Robson who played for West Brom for 6 years and managed Newcastle for 5.

Fact: West Brom have not beaten Newcastle United in 15 league games.

Fact: Newcastle won just 1 game in their last 13 league games of the 2008/2009 season.

Referee: Mike Dean

The commentators have already had a go at our strip, "There's only one team in the world who can wear yellow" and we know there not talking about our team.

Paced has stepped up slightly.

Anyone know what our allocation was for seats? Only 2500 isnt many travelling fans.

There are so many empty seats I would have expected the stadium to be fuller bearing in mind its the first day of the season.

im ok with this result to be fair. WBA are going to be a decent side all year and if we want to be in the promotion hunt then we need to 'not lose' to teams like WBA. drew is ok.

PS team looks tired and not with it you know - i can't really imagine how tough this has been on all of the lads. Some sympathy needs to go out to them all and the coaching staff.

Good points:
Krul, Carroll

Bad points:
Ameobi, Nolan, R Taylor did I mention Ameobi!

Enrique didnt seem interested, Smith tried and did break up a few attacks but needs to be able to pass forward, not back each time. Jonas runs and runs but still no end product.

We need another CB and a decent mobile striker.

I thought it was a fair and decent result, playing away against one of the teams that will be pushing for promotion. Krul looked good, but a bit wild at times but that will come of age, and he will learn when to come out with a bit more experience, he did well. Coloccini and Gutierrez really struggled for me and will get to roughed up in this league. Ameobi was dreadful and we can't keep playing him. Nolan struggled at times to get in the game, but overall I thought we played ok, but didn't create a lot of chances. To me I thought Smith played well, with f@ck#ng shocked me as he is normally sh@t

Shola was very poor. I thought Duff was the best of our bunch. Krul was cool.

Its 01:00hrs and ive just come in off the juice so sorry if I talk toilet.

If im honest I would have taken a draw with a decent performance before we started. We were playing away, to one of the top teams who have lost just about no players during the summer.

Ive slated him but Smith was my man of the match. Maybe the drop down has helped but suppose it couldnt do much worse. I felt he was everywhere in the first half and looked as though he gave a sh17.

Ive backed Ameobi to score goals in the championship but after today Im just not sure. Again, suppose West Brom will be one of the best in the league but he was tw47full today.

Jonas, loads of running but no end product. Colo, shocking, where the f00k did we get him from. Duff scored but nowt else and would like to see a few more of the youngsters get on instead.

Nolan, FFS.

What was the crack with Barton. Was at work until Five yesterday so didnt hear apart from rumours.

Krul, couldnt ask for anything more. Just hope whoever is in charge can keep the players in who deserve.

I'd keep krul in goal some of those saves today were class, and now the two matches I have seen him play he has had a blinder in both (today and the palermo game).

Colo was useless, didnt rate enrique much. Thought r and s taylor had decent games. Smith was ok. Gutierez and duff werent too bad, |Nolan did well in buld up of the goal and thats about it. We need a striker, a centre back and some cover for the fullbacks ASAP.

I was pleased with a point WBA will be a decent team this year good first away result.

Linekar and Shearer summed up the problems with Newcastle in a few words before the match. No pace and no creativity. All our centre midfielders are the same, Smith, Barton, Butt, Geremi and Guthrie are the same style with some being better than others. Duff and Jonas lack the pace and last ball, but Duff will create more problems than Jonas. To me Jonas is going to struggle in this league, he is to soft.
Ameobi and Carroll are to similar and won't get the chances to score goals and then we also have Ranger. Enrique and Ryan Taylor are not enough players as full backs and Taylor looked out of place at times at right back. Coliccini is going to be totally sh@t in this league, West Brom was not going to be a surprise in this league as he has played against these players last season, what happens when he comes up against Scunny, he will be ripped apart.
To me Ashley has to stop the f@ck#ng around, and get somebody in place to bring some players in as cover and for the 1st team. We have already lost quite a few players so the squad is already small and we are bound to lose some more. You would think that we could use the money saved on wages and the money raised on fees to bring in players with pace, quality and creativity to help us. With the current squad we won't get promoted, with the season being so long we won't have the depth to get us up.
I thought the team played ok and some players were better than others, Krul being excellent when he came on. Smith had a good game but did he look like a 50k a week player, to me we can get that sort of midfielder for a lot less per week

Gutierrez and Coloccini need to go, they aren't right at all for this league. Can't see any goals in the team, Ameobi it seems is rubbish whatever league you put him in, although if he's given a run in the side we might see him turn alright, like he did under JFK last year.

Don't suppose we can really say who we need to buy yet though, we don't know who's staying, and there's nobody to even buy us players yet.

I think with everything that has went on and still going on, it was a good result against a team that will be pushing up there at the end of the season. We will need to create more chances against the other teams as there are quite a few teams who will be pushing for promotion
