Match Preview/Thread/Stats: Tottenham v Newcastle

By Tyne-Talk
April 19 2009

Newcastle United travel to White Hart Lane for today's televised 1.30pm kick off. Whilst Newcastle have taken just 2 draws and 4 defeats away from their last 6 matches, Spurs have won 3 and drawn 2 of their last 6. Spurs go into the match confident of their ability on home turf where they have lost just once since Harry Redknapp arrived in October.

Harry could reintroduce Jermaine Defoe into the team after he returned to training his week having recovered from broken foot. Roman Pavlyuchenko, who has been experiencing back problems, but came on against West Ham last week and scored, and former Newcastle United player Jermaine Jenas, who is struggling with a hamstring injury are likely to be on the team sheet but unlikely to play a full 90minutes.

Wilson Palacios returns from suspension to rejoin his spurs team-mates.

Whilst Tottenham are 9th in the Premier League, Newcastle are currently in 19th and need all 3 points to take them to 18th - they can go no higher today, but a defeat will make staying up evener harder that it already looks to be.

Newcastle go into today's match having not won in 7 games, however their last London win was a 4-1 thrashing of spurs in March last year and whilst this season's statistics aren't the most promising, Newcastle can boast having scored the most amount of Premier League goals against Spurs than any other club, 55 in total.

Alan Shearer will make a late decision on whether Obafemi Martins, who pulled out of last week's game at Stoke with a groin problem, will play. Mark Viduka has made waves through the fans community this week, with debates as to whether he should start or not on the forums; he has recovered from his recurrent Achilles injury and will be hoping to play a part of today's game after Shearer praised him in midweek.

Peter Lovenkrands (chest infection) and Steven Taylor (ankle) are both back in contention, but Jose Enrique who has a knee injury is a doubt.

Andy Carroll will be chasing a starting place after coming on as a substitute against Stoke and scoring the equalising goal as is Jonas Gutierrez who gave a strong substitutes performance last weekend.

Shearer remains without Joey Barton who is hinting at a return next week.

FACT: - There has never been a goalless draw in 31 Premier League games between these 2 clubs.

Referee: Mark Halsey.

wata shite first half. nicky butt in particular has been extremely terrible every one of out attacks break down because of him. jonas is looking lively which is a positive.

Three at the back always looks great on paper but it never seems to work.

For it to work you have to have a midfield with a lot more legs than what we have.

We cant hold the ball in the centre or up front. Fancy guthrie for butt. Maybe Viduka later on.

well folks, another typical away performanc. Not sure what led Alan to believe we could play 3-5-2.....i assume its a knee jerk reaction to losing our only LB Enrique - but really its just pathetic. Get Owen off for Martins, then eventually Carroll off for Viduka...or play 3 up front. we have to create some pressure....sitting back and letting them have the ball isn't gonna work. I would rather get done 3-0 and feel we had a go then lose 1-0 and never attack.

Harper looks injured. Martins on Butt off please. Maybe Viduka for Carroll too. Go for a 4-3-3/3-4-3.

prob with jonas that he just runs around almost without knowing where he is going.....and he can't cross every attack slows down cos he needs three touches and at least to cuts around a player before he crosses, usually hitting the front post defender...

This is @#$%&. We deserve to get relegated sadly. Every week everyone talks about how much they want to fight and every week its @#$%& poor effort on the pitch. We could have easily avoided relegation even if we lost today. But we will not win a game before the end of the season, so that's it.

Not good enough from start to finish..... improved slightly with Martins and Viduka...but nowhere near good enough!.

Also why do our midfield continue to pass back each time and not look for a ball forward ..Butt in particularly does this continuously...drives me crazy.

When is Enrique back?

didnt think we were going to win, and in fact the effort last 20 mins or so was better. we all know that the players we have aren't good enough and we can't expect to win games like that anymore. We don't have the talent or the spirit. that being said, our goal difference didn't get the battering it deserved today - we are 4 points away from safety and can get 3 of them back next week. clearly if we don't win next weekend then its over. so we have another week of high blood pressure.

We MUST win against Portsmouth...gain some confidence back..and isnt it about time we got something at Anfield?
