Nile Ranger Signs Until 2012

Toon teenager Nile Ranger has put pen to paper and signed a new contract with the club after celebrating his birthday at the weekend. The 18 year old who has scored 22 goals for the club in the youth and reserve teams, has committed himself to a three and a half year deal. The London born striker, who began his footballing career at Southampton, is yet to make his senior debut for the club but will be pleased at his place on the bench against Stoke and Shearer's attitude to new talent.

Nile told the official club website nufc.co.uk.

"The past year has been a dream for me and it couldn't have gone any better.

I'm buzzing to sign a new contract and commit my future to the club because this is where I want to play my football."

After naming him on the bench at the weekend Shearer said;

"If you're good enough - it doesn't matter what age you are.

If he can add something to the team, I would have no fear about putting him on."

Great news as he is an extremely promising player.

Glad to see Ashley won't be trying to make cheap money off the back off all the youngesters in the summer.

Great news. Its always wonderful when promising youngsters say, "this is where I want to play my football." Hopefully he he gets his chance soon (in the premier league I mean, not the championship).

ive noticed they are trying to tie a few contracts up quickly, cos most players have no ties to keep them with us should we go down,

Now lock down Donniger for 3 more years and stop playing Butt so we can have decent Center Midfielder.

There's been a lot of hot air floating around about this guy.

But Shola is keeping him out the team so I'll wait and see how good he actually is.

Shearer seems to like him, I'm certain he'll make a start before the end of the season.

the above is the winner for most succinct comment on a very promising young player, for that is all ranger is, and we have had lots and lots of those.

i honestly hope he has a great career with us, but he needs room to grow, and make his mistakes, without the suffocating weight of expectation we have all placed on the shoulders of young players who have come through before him.
howay nile.

Southamptons academy have produced some decent youths,

it would be great if he burst on the scene like Walcott did,

I don't think that Shola will be playing a whole lot more this season....he was just terrible at stoke!

Yes, Shola was terrible - if Carroll had started instead of him we may have got all 3 points.

not sure you can really say that, i don't honestly think that Carroll has been that good over the games where he has played 90mins - he still lacks movement and his touch is a little oba martins like. But thats not to say that his presence helps a lot! I would like to see us play 3 up front with him as the target man and Owen and Oba playin off him. Don't be suprised if they pull that out for the Pompey game at SJP.

I would say that.

Perhaps overlooked is the fact that Carrol did a great job of winning defensive headers after he came on. The goal was the result of Shola's mental error. Don't think one can say anyone else would have made the same error.

shola was awful in that role, and gave away at least one corner with a poor defensive header before the goal was scored
