Newcastle United boss Glenn Roeder today confirmed that he had rejected an approach from Wolves boss Mick McCarthy for their Irish international Alan O'Brien.

The 21 year old is well known to boss Mick McCarthy from his time as Ireland Manager and an approach was earlier rejected by the North East Club.

It is likely that Wolves made an approach to loan O'Brien as the left winger is highly rated at St James' Park but Roeder told The Evening Chronicle "Wolves and Leeds have come in for O'Brien and Pattison, but they are staying with us.

"We are looking for players, not looking to get rid of them and the time is not right to let O'Brien and Pattison to go, even if it meant they gained some experience of playing regular first-team football."

McCarthy is looking to boost his squad with loan players and has already taken Liverpool youngster Darren Potter on a season long loan. However after the impressive performance of youngster Daniel Jones in the 1-0 win over Burnley on Saturday, the left wing position may not be so much of a concern.
