Leigh Genesis 0 Witton Albion 8

The encouraging recent performances of Alan Kershaw's Leigh Genesis side completely disintegrated at Crilly Park this evening as visitors Witton romped to an incredible 8-0 Evo-Stik League Division One North victory.

Although they lost 1-0 at home to Wakefield in their last outing, Leigh's performance that afternoon gave the assembled faithful at Crilly Park a degree of confidence ahead of the visit of ninth-placed Witton Albion, but Genesis simply didn't get close to Albion all evening.

The stage was set with the visitors scoring two goals within sixty seconds of one another after sixteen minutes of play when the ball broke free for the unmarked Dave McPherson to slot home at the back post only seconds before Carl Frost doubled Witton's lead in spectacular fashion with a terrific twenty five yard strike that flew past Leigh goalkeeper Adam Judge.

A rare Leigh foray up the slope in Witton's half brought controversy on nineteen minutes when young frontman James Carey beat Witton goalkeeper Matt Cooper but was dragged down in the midst of knocking the ball around him on the edge of the penalty area, only for Cooper to escape with just a yellow card for his offence.

The visitors converted a penalty on thirty four minutes when Andy Kinsey was fouled in the area by Steve Ferrigan, with Kinsey picking himself up to despatch the spot kick past Judge before Leigh went close on thirty eight minutes when Carey was released on goal but fired wildly over when clean through, with the half being completed with a fourth Witton goal when Frost knocked in his second of the evening at the back post from a Calum Botham cross.

Similar service continued after the break with Witton adding a fifth goal after just thirty one seconds of the second half when Judge failed to keep hold of the ball as it dropped at the feet of Richard Foulkes to leave the simple task of finding the empty net.

Genesis debutant Nathan McDonald was introduced up front on fifty minutes to replace defender Steve Brockley as the Leigh player/coach struggled with an injury, but it did little to stem the flow of play with Witton scoring a sixth goal on sixty eight minutes when they took advantage of Leigh being momentarily down to ten men as Kinsey lashed in his second goal of the evening with Carey on the ground injured.

Only five more minutes past before Witton number seven Foulkes added a seventh for his side before number eight McPherson continuing the sequence with his side's eighth and final goal on eighty one minutes to give the visitors a huge victory.

Leigh now have to pick themselves up for the visit of Trafford to Crilly Park this Saturday (15th January, 3pm kick off) before travelling over the Pennines to face Garforth Town next Tuesday (18th January, 7.45pm).

Leigh Genesis; Adam Judge, Bernard Williams, Alex Grisedale, Steve Brockley (Nathan McDonald 50), Steve Ferrigan, Rowan Garnett (Davison Banda 59), Sam Fairhurst, James Carey (Chris Dykes 72), Nick Eastham, Dale McDonald, James Kelly. Subs (not used); Ali Asgari, Jack Burke

Said the same ourselves. The ones who did come were sound, but there again it's easy to be nice when your team are winning 8-0!

I reckon there was more merit in this result than losing to Wakefield. Wakefield are the proverbial bag of, er.... (five letters, rhymes with white),yet somehow t'Leythers made them look like Barcelona at times. Witton are a good team, with some very decent players. I don't reckon there's any shame in losing to them whilst we're in the current stage of our 'new' team's development.

Wakefield tonked us at their place so even though we lost last week marked progress (and I reckon we'd have won had we been more composed in front of goal).
