After conceding two late goals in their previous outing against Bamber Bridge three weeks ago, Leigh Genesis were consigned to a similar fate on New Years Day as hosts AFC Fylde maintained their push for the play-off spots.

With the recent weather meaning a large degree of inactivity for Alan Kershaw's side with a number of games postponed and training arrangements disrupted, a Leigh team featuring debutant Ali Asgari struggled to get in to the game but looked to be heading in to the break on level pegging, only for the hosts to score twice on the brink of half-time.

Fylde took the lead on forty two minutes when Tom Cahill slotted past Genesis goalkeeper Adam Judge, and that lead was doubled two minutes later when Kevin Townson floated the ball home.

The home side have invested heavily in their playing squad this season and Michael Barnes celebrated signing a new contract with Fylde by scoring his side's third goal on seventy two minutes before substitute Matt Walwyn completed the scoring with an effort from twenty five yards with eleven minutes left.

Leigh are back in action less than 48 hours after the conclusion of their trip to Fylde with a home fixture against Wakefield on Bank Holiday Monday (3rd January) with a 3pm kick off.
