Norton & Stockton Ancients 2 Leigh Genesis 1

Ten man Leigh Genesis once again fell to their late goal curse to crash out of the FA Cup at the Second Qualifying Round stage with defeat to Northern League side Norton & Stockton Ancients in a tempestuous tie on Teesside.

Having exited the President's Cup in a midweek with a narrow defeat at Skelmersdale, Leigh embarked on the mammoth trip to the North East for the second of four consecutive cup fixtures, with neighbours Atherton Collieries and league rivals Garforth Town visiting Crilly Park over the next week for Lancashire Trophy and FA Trophy ties respectively.

After making a number of changes for Tuesday's 1-0 loss, Leigh boss Mark Maddox restored several players to the starting line up, including a return from a hamstring injury for front man Nick Eastham, while England Futsal international Tom Obasi retained his place in the side after returning on Tuesday evening.

Prior to this season, Leigh's last FA Cup victory came in the North East with a 3-1 win in 2005 at Chester-le-Street Town, ironically the side defeated by Norton in the previous round when Leigh saw off Rossendale 4-3 in a thrilling tie, having defeated Runcorn Linnets 1-0 in the Preliminary Round at Crilly Park in August.

Currently occupying an impressive sixth position in the traditionally-strong STL Northern Football League, hosts Norton started brightly and went close to taking the lead shortly after the half hour mark when front man Jamie Clarke, who was to prove a thorn in Leigh's side throughout the afternoon, created an opening that deserved more than being put wide from only eight yards out, shortly before Clarke sent a shot whistling past Adam Judge's left hand post.

Leigh had to wait until the thirty seventh minute to create their first serious opening when Rowan Garnett threaded a ball through for Eastham to see a shot tipped wide by the goalkeeper, who did well to keep hold of an Andy Heald strike from the resultant corner.

The game descended in to chaos shortly before half-time when the hosts were awarded a penalty when Adam Judge was ruled to have brought down Clarke. Judge turned villain to hero by saving the penalty that followed, but that was only the start of the fireworks as a mass brawl broke out with fists flying on both sides. Once the dust had settled, Norton's Craig Gott was shown a straight red card for his part in the melée, with Leigh's Kieran Molyneux following him down the tunnel after being shown a second yellow card, the second time already this season that he has been dismissed.

With both sides reduced to ten men, half-time saw some reorganisation for Leigh with James Olsen brought on to replace Obasi, and Danny Lyons being withdrawn for Joe McKane, who was an impressive debutant at Skelmersdale earlier in the week.

The second half saw more of an attacking threat offered by Leigh, with a well-worked move seeing Olsen have a shot saved by the goalkeeper and Eastham sending a shot narrowly wide of the right hand post.

However, disaster was to the strike on sixty seven minutes when, after tipping a shot over the bar for a corner, Judge was beaten by a Jamie Clarke header after the Norton front man had been left unmarked in the penalty area.

Just two minutes later, however, and Leigh were back on level terms when Rick Gleave, who was nominated by TV personality Tim Lovejoy as a candidate for 'Player of the Round' after his ninety-sixth minute winner at Rossendale in the First Qualifying Round, grabbed an equaliser for the visitors when left one-on-one with the goalkeeper and made no mistake in slotting the ball home.

Academy graduate Craig Carney was brought on for Heald with nine minutes remaining, but just as thoughts drifted to a midweek replay at Crilly Park, Leigh's hearts were broken by that man Clarke again, this time heading home a cross from the right hand side with just six minutes remaining.

Genesis tried desperately to grab an equaliser but to no avail and were left to reflect on a second cup exit in four days as they made the long journey home.

Tuesday evening (28th September) sees Leigh back in cup action when neighbours Atherton Collieries make the short stroll to Crilly Park for a 7.45pm kick off in the Lancashire FA Co-Operative Challenge Trophy First Round before Evo-Stik League Division One North rivals Garforth Town, who lost a league game to Leigh earlier in the month, are the visitors for an FA Trophy tie next Saturday (2nd October, 3pm).

not good at all. First half hour not many chances as game was a bit scrappy. obasi failed to get in to the game at all which was dissappointing expecting some good attacking football from him this season on the left.
no arguments with the sending off sam got a cracking photo just before molyneux went for punch norton player lol

overall deserved a draw just one mistake by olsen that cost us at the end.

Disappointing i know but at least we won 2 fa cup games this year.

Completely agree. Was gutting enough to lose in the first place on Saturday, but the draw has just made it ten times worse!
